Do you know what a 'Florin' is?

So... this will appeal more to older Brits and a few more educated others, but did ya know?

I recently saw this coin of the realm and although it's also a town in California it was originally a British coin issued when Edward 3rd was King of England.

And it's value is.... (Do you know without peeking?)

I chose option 5... I knew what it was, but not how much it was worth. A bit shameful really. It's something I should have known...

We have had some funny amounts of currency in the UK from the 'farthing' to the 'guinea!' but a 'florin'?

Australia had a coin called a Florin before decimal currency was introduced, I didn't know about the other currency. Here's one I carry in my wallet

Way back when Sovereigns where made of real Gold & Florins made of high Silver content, and were actually worth something......

before the Euro was named, the Florin was the choice of many for the new currency but the Greeks and a few other hairy types objected so we got the euro instead...

Does anybody remember when the dollar was worth something?

I thought a florin was an Italian currency. Wasn't it mentioned in Shakespeare, perhaps in one of those stories set in Verona or Venice?
