The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins

Just in the middle of reading this , and while its an interesting read on the irrationality of religious belief in the modern world with some fascinating arguments , it falls down for me because of one point .
The author implies (if he means it or not ) that anyone who believes in a God of any kind is deluded or crazy .
Fair enough ..... but that dosnt begin to explain why religion is actually on the increase in certain parts of the globe , and on the decline ( to the point of dissapearing ) in others .
In this he comes across just like the religious person hes trying to argue against .... ie - Im right , you must be wrong .

Still an interesting read , he dismisses Buddhism as a religion , just a good moral way to lead your life as an individual , and theres some great points on all aspects of religion , and science Vs blind faith .

    What do others think ?
Free your mind and your ass will follow .

    This book is the truth.

People who believe in God ARE deluded or crazy. Buddhism isn't a religeon.

Religeon is a weapon in the struggle for people power.

In the west and especially in the USA Christianity is worn as a duplitous badge of social honor and has screwed up the imaginations and childhoods of many many millions of American kids. Compulsory classes in church and child molesting men have taken it as a party for the pervert, not to mention the shallow sub-intelligent mainstream masses who just need something to do on Sundays.

As for Muslims... well my opinions of these ignorant pigs is well documented so no need to rake up all that.

In an affluent world controlled by a largely secular and selfish few, humans can't see the dangers now looming that religeon is creating. We've lost the will to confront what is bad with the human race and now seem to only want to run away from it or dismiss it as "not my problem!"

If you have children and you love them then you'll be very concerned about religeon... it's coming to a relative near you!

Read "God is Not Great" by Hitchens. The man is so witty.

How anyone can read Dawkins or Hitchens and still believe churches deserve tax incentives is mind-boggling.

Also read The Truth About Mohammed, by Robert Spencer. What a bloodthirsty rapist Mohammed was!
It is outrageous those heathens from Turkey and every other shithole in Central Asia are allowed to immigrate and poison our cities with taxpayer financed mosques.

I'm also about half way through the book, to be honest I put it down some week's ago, meaning to take it with me to LOS last week for plane reading, but forgot, probably more interesting things on my mind.
I guess I agree with you Jim about his point of view, if you believe in God (i.e. disagree with me) you are deluded. That makes him sound a little like the crazies he rails against.
I'm still not sure about my belief in God, of course being agnostic is seen as the worst position to take.
What I am sure about is that I don't believe in religion. being brought up as a catholic, in the UK during the sixties with all those Irish Priests and nuns would be enough to turn anybody off.
Dawkin's comment about in a world without religion good people would do good and evil people would do evil. In a world with religion, evil people still do evil, but sometimes good people do evil too.
          how true.

Dawkins knows his stuff, thats is for sure and i agree with him.

Where the God issue isnt so clear cut is when you consider the wider question of how the Universe came to be. Its gets a bit fuzzy at that point and no one has any clear answers yet... although for the purposes of day to day existance God certainly isnt around and there is no evidence or footprint of a god.

If a god being existed he/it/ they would have to be outside of this Universe and timescape and not in it .

If liked The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins be sure to check out Jonathan Miller's excellent BBC series "A Brief History of Disbelief" Check out http://www.abriefhistoryofdisbelief.org/ for more info. It has been broadcast in select US markets on PBS. It presents non-theism is a very open accessible manner.

Haven't seem the books and tend not to read books pro or con about religion. It took many years and finally figured out what works for me and along the way lost a need to be critical of other peoples beliefs.
Each person excepts or rejects religion based upon what works for them and what they have been exposed to over the course of their life. Some people will question what they have been fed by otheirs but not many.
