There are only 2 cameras in the world. Canon and Nikon. Sony is a wannabe Canon or Nikon.

You are taking sex pictures. You don't need zoom! Duh?

However, after 15 postings or so, you are still aiming at the original camera you were suggesting. So just buy the damn thing and stop asking for advice you won't take! As Stogie said, the camera is not the problem, however, being a gadget freak, I know the feeling and will upgrade to totally useless more expensive device becaise it feels good, as well, and ask advice for which I will never take. Ahh, that's what cameras are for! Actually I think Salma is going to be using it for more than that, lol!

I wouldn't write Sony out of the picture yet - it bought out a fairly competent camera company in Minolta - the photos I have posted and sent are taken with my 5D - not done in a studio of course, but still a lot better than any point and shoot could do. However, SB is right, technique is everything, but starting with a good tool is a great help.

I have had a Canon since 2001. The little devil blew everyone away at the time. First digital camera most people had seen. It still takes fine pictures.

I think I upgraded in 2003 or 2004, and the replacement does a fine job.

The real problem isn't the camera, it's the idiot behind the lens. I noticed that other people take better pictures with my camera than I do.

Retired the top 12.  Need a new dirty dozen.

Update: The new list is coming together: Nong Poy, Anita, Nok, Gif, Liisa Winkler, Kay, Nina Poon.  Is it possible to find 5 more?  Until then, GGs:  Jessica Alba, Yuko Ogura, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Q, and Gong Li.

yes in fact people i am now seeking for a camera which I myself can use as a serious hobbyist and not just the model behind teh camera...i mean people can only get so much of me and get tired of me eventually but i want to assume a perspective of my own and to share the beauty of the different images of our world behind my own eyes behind the lens of a camera....

I hear music I think when I read that!

Go for it Lisa. We anxiously await examples from your new camera whatever it is. Frankly speaking, all cameras are pretty good today so no matter what you pick I'm sure you'll be happy and the results great. The results will come from the heart, and all the options above are good technically to capture what you want.

                      Very Nice !

If you want to take pictures like that, I strongly suggest a DSLR with interchangeable lenses.

Getting 'Serious' with photography requires a camera where you can change lenses and control the aperture, frame rate, and ISO speed - options that are not available with 'point and click' cameras.

If thats the way you are going you have three choices for manufacturers, Canon, Nikon and Sony.

All of these have dozens of different lenses to choose from.

I suggest Canon, there are about 10 different bodies from Canon that all use the same lenses, prices range from $500 USD to $5000. Nikon is very similar in this respect. Sony however only has 2 bodies to choose from - both more expensive than the cheapest Canon and Nikon.

Another big advantage with Canon, is there is a very large 2nd hand market for bodies and lenses. If you want a new lens for closeup work, or maybe for distance shots - you can often find it used for a lots less. Used lenses are often in perfect shape, it just that the previous owner decided to buy something better and didn't need 2 of the same type.

Buy a Canon or Nikon, its a long term investment, you will buy new lenses, then new bodies, etc...
In 10+ years I have gone thru 3 Canon bodies (40D will be #4) , and 6+ lenses, flashes... but I am still using some of my original lenses.

ps. I suggest Canon because it is what I use, Nikon is just as good -- one deciding factor is what your friends use. If you know lots of people with Nikon, use Nikon.

                          ohhh ok....

i heard that ill spend more on the lenses than on the body as i accumulate lenses the more i delve into the hobby...

a friend of mine here in Singapore taught me about aperture values and F stops and ISO settings...so thanks razrman...and he treated me to dinner too hehehe

maybe i also need to devote some time to study these dizzying online tutorials about digital photographer before i indulge in an important purchase....

                          thanks for the suggestions

Never mind tutorials, just get out there with your new digital and take photos, (lots of them) but do it like you were using expensive film. Experiment, you can't break anything.
