FDR was doing everything to help the UK short of declaring war before Pearl Harbour.

The UK and Comonwealth could have won on Churchill's terms  -  'Give us the weapons and we will win'  -  but it would have taken many many more years for the UK and the Russians to have worn the Nazi's down without the help of the US.

I think you will find that the English invaded Ireland in 1649.
A long time before the period you are alluding to.

The most recent intervention of the British army in Ireland was to stop the Catholics and Protestants fom killing each other.

Unfortunately as is often the case it's easier for the protagonists to blame the people sent in to keep them apart than it is to sit down and sort out their problems.
