Herself likes this stuff but she only buys it fresh and she gets the market trader she buys it off to cut the good bits out for her.

To me it tastes like custard and/or bananas and as I have never liked either you can keep it!

I feel the same way about durian as a Thai person would feel about Stilton!

Ah, yes, durian. Considered to be an aphrodisiac. Smells bad, tastes good. I love the stuff and I can actually buy it locally here in California. The fruit has a soft, sweet consistency and it is absolutely worth a try.

There's a reason why the Durian is known as the King of all Fruits, and it ain't because it reminds one of stinky feet. If anything, it's the exotic lush smell of asia, full bodied, aromatic & sweet at the same time. Does that describe stinky feet?

Durian is banned from the big 5 star hotels (Mandarin, Peninsula etc) because of the smell.
Due to the number of Filipinos working all over the World, the fruit can be found in most countries.
It is certainly available in the USA in LA, Seattle, SF & NYC, in the UAR in Dubai and in stores that carry "exotic fruits" (no puns please) in the UK in London and Manchester.
Thais, Filipinos and Malaysians love Durian but I find the smell revolting and it seems to linger.

I can't eat enough of the Durian. I had heard about this fruit before my first visit to Thailand so I was anxious to try it and see what all the hulla ballou was about. From my first bite I was hooked. My wife helps me to pick out a good one in the street stands that are all around in Surin. When the lady opens it if it is not up to her standards she will pick another. My favorite way to eat it when I am in our home is with rum raisin ice cream. Combined with my eating of fried bugs I think that I am a few cards short of a full deck.

Never tasted it or smelled it but I would like to give it the taste test. Try anything at least once.

I like it, but that shocks even my Thai friends.

You MUST get it fresh, eat it immediately, and throw away the rest...OUTSIDE your house/room.

Durian is insanely high in Calories, so don't eat too much; and don't drink for a few hours after ( I don't know why, but thats the accepted advice here).

There are 3 different varieties, but its doubtful you would notice the difference the first time you try it.

According to Wikipedia there are at least 30 varieties of which 9 produce edible fruit?

I'm talking about whats commonly sold in Thailand, Golden pillow (Monthong), Long-stem (Khan Yaow / Gan Yao) and Gibbon (Chanee). The other varieties are either 'special' breeds or from other countries.

I like Gan Yao the best, but its the priciest - and has the shortest growing season.

Just a handy tip to those who wants to try. Be mindful that when you grab a handful, the smells lingers on your fingers hours after you have finished. One way to get rid of the smell is to use a mixture of fresh lime with water, pour it into the fruit sac (from where the edible parts come from, the multiple compartments within the fruit) and then pour onto your hands to rinse.
Alcohol and durian, as an accepted cultural norm in this part of the world does not mix because it increases the "heat" within the body, and I don't mean it in the aphrodisiac way!
Also if you plan to have sex within a couple of hours of consuming durian, its best your partner consumes it too, otherwise its fairly "exotic" to the person who did not touch the stuff. Also be mindful of the copious amount of gas release from your body shortly after consuming it. That kinda spoils the fun of being topped if you are constantly releasing toxic fumes.
