Yes you are right  -  but I'm not sure if you know the reason why  

It goes back a long way  -  probably more than 200 years.

The reasoning is that the people with brown skin worked outside in the sun  -  ie. they were labourers.  The people with light skin did not work outside  -  and therefore are higher class.

Unfortunately this is reinforced today by television advertising  -  pale skinned girls are more beautiful  

Thailand is most definitely NOT the only country that applies this sort of descrimination.
