  • (SiamSam @ Mar. 09 2011,16:30) Oxymoron. An Ozzie commenting on the quality of wine.   Can't beat good retsina my friend.
Then I look forward to trying a 'good' retsina...

I have no idea what you have against Australian wine but I will bring something special to Rhodes & Panicos can confirm its quality...
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

    • Paccie,

Retsina is an acquired taste so perhaps even an excellent bottle will not appeal to you palate. It has an interesting history.

I am only teasing you about Australian wine. I have nothing against it and have experienced some excellent bottles both red and white. However I dislike shiraz and it seems every time some one opens an Australian bottle around me it is exactly that.

I look forward to uncorking one of your nation's best the next time we meet, be it in Rhodes or Pattaya. Tell me when, where, and assure me you are not bringing a shiraz and I will be there.

Panicos, sorry for diverting your thread.

      • Sam, Retsina urggh its like aviation fuel. Greek food is upmarket barbie food. I thought you would be a connessiour of fine French cuisine hailing from North Northern America, well North East. More like truffles & a Vintage Claret. Paccie bring him one of your fine Sauvignons.

Kevin is looking very wobbly......... might have to start your trip earlier. I may need a wingman!

        • Well Bobby I guess you mis-read me completely. I'm a low-life smuck with not a hint of class whatsoever. I am not a fan of French cuisine at all, fine or otherwise. Snooty, pretentious, overly rich, creamy slop. However I do love French bourgogne.

If you are comparing Greek to Barbie food I assume you have never had the opportunity to avail yourself of its excellence. And as mentioned, Retsina is most definitely an acquired taste not unlike getting to appreciate the taste of blue cheese or similar first impression stomach turners.

I am disappointed that Kevin may abort. If I could move up my trip I most certainly would. I'd be happy to replace him as your wingman, foot soldier, butler, dresser, cohort, advisor, and all 'round  humble servant.

          • That would be most apreciated, I may take you up on that one day. Just a chance to leg pull or rather Yank, oh no your not from that country are you. Continent maybe.

Everything in moderation, even a Macdonalds freshly cooked at the right time. They do know how to hit the taste buds. Every day though would result in obeisity & liver failure. How come the French are so skinny. Maybe they dont eat their own food. Opps sorry guys

Counting the days till wheels up. Once I have Kevin on or off tour I will pm you.

OMG, where are the new style French restaurants there in Canada? Those creamy sauces went out with platform shoes & spoon collars.

Several years ago I was taken to a top French restaurant in Norway. It was like entering a time machine. I had forgotten that other countries hadn't moved on with modern French food.

They still had Chateaubriand with Bearnaise Sauce, something I hadn't seen on a menu in 20 years back home. There wasn't a single item on the menu I could relate to & what I had was heavy & stodgy.

Good for a cold climate I guess but not representative of what is happening in modern French kitchens. Here in Oz, there are places amalgamating French food with Japanese. And its fantastic.

As for Greek food, I agree entirely, it is one the great cuisines of the world. Taramasalata, Avgolemono, Moussaka, Octopus & the wonderful Greek-style lamb, some of my favourite dishes anywhere.

And I know there must be decent Retsina available. I had the misfortune to drink a lot of cheap Retsina & even though I love a dry wine, some of it had the consistency of kerosene...

              • Greek food can be as 'stodgy' as French, like any other coo-seene. Depends on the company one keeps

I'm sure Panicos wouldn't have taken you to that Norwegian place
Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage

...i will take them to one of those greek fish tavernas where
they will taste fresh fish like they never eaten before.
You see the mediteranian fish taste so good (because of lots of salt in the sea) .For all you guys who like fish, me also, and when we are in los we all go crazy to go and eat fish, and  go crazy because its so cheap.
Well if only you could try the mediteranian fish then you will find that the fish you are eating in Los (and all the countries around there) is tastless.
So for me the only good about those fish is that are cheaper than my country...so i wouldnt dream to take my friends who will come from so far away to see me to give them less than the best.

                  • I am a fish lover for sure and to be more specific, a Greek fish tavernas fish lover where the Mediterranean Sea Bass or Porgy or Red Snapper is grilled to absolute tender perfection and the Greek chef magically makes the bones disappear. Grilled with light olive oil and lemon, mmmmmmm. Ambrosia!!! No better dish in the world served with a side of garlic, onion and tomato stewed lima beans with a side of Greek salad with that extra dry feta. Whoppee I am salivating!!! This is almost as exciting as two ladyboys in my bed. Oh yes, and don't forget that wonderful bottle of Retsina. Yummy.

                    • God youve got me salivaiting now. That last rendition is definately a mediterranean menu. Portugal has the same on offer in the beach bars but do they know how to charge. I had lunch with my missis & it was touching £120 with one Jug of Sangria, fish & chips & a tomato & onion salad. Trumpy or what. God thats a full on session in The Penthouse I would imagine.

Panicos you are so right the higher saline concentration is so much better in the Med.

120 quid would buy a hell of session!! With no joiner fees & ST rates no more than average, you could have several girls on several occasions.

I should know, I have done a little bit of groundwork there myself...
