My contact (A contestant) at the Miss Amazing Philippines Beauty Pageant 2008 has sent the following report:
The Pageant is being held at The Amazing Philippine Theatre, The Manila Film Centre (Cultural Centre of the Philippines Complex), Roxas Blvd, Pasay City, Manila.
The Amazing Philippine Theatre was established in 2001 to produce the €œAmazing Philippine Show,€ a theatrical variety show that features Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and Korean folk dances, song numbers, and comedy acts, among others, performed by the most beautiful transsexuals, transgender people, and transvestites in the Philippines.
Thailand pioneered variety shows featuring beautiful transsexuals, transgender people, and transvestites with Alcazar and Tiffany in Pattaya and Calypso and Mambo in Bangkok. These shows attract tourists from all over the world.
€œThe reason we put up this production is that we believe in the talent and skills of Filipino artists in acting, singing, dancing, stage production, lighting and costume design,€ said Lee Jong Hyun, the theatre€™s chairman.
The company employs 147 workers in various departments housed within the Manila Film Centre. Lee said the company believes that the tourism industry will thrive even during economically unpredictable times. During 2006, the shows were watched by over 280,000 visitors. Koreans are the shows€™ biggest fans at 80 percent. Chinese, Japanese and local tourists also watch the shows.
The theatre has staged the Miss Amazing Philippines Beauty Pageant for the past six years in cooperation with the Pasay City Tourism and Cultural Development Office in an effort to attract tourists and allow transgender people to realize their full potential.
The Miss Amazing Philippines Beauty Pageant features transsexuals, transgender people, transvestites and cross-dressers in a grand display of beauty and talent.
All contestants are Filipinos from different cities and provinces in the Philippines.
The Grand Winner (the Queen) and her court are assured of slots in the Amazing Philippine Theatre Shows, which were inspired by the world-famous performances in Thailand. With the more popular performers in the shows getting as much as $100 in tips a night from tourists for photo-ops, the pageant is the most prestigious, one of its kind in the country.
The Grand Winner will also compete in Thailand for the title of Miss International Queen the following year.
€œOne of the objectives of the pageant is to uplift the way people look at gay beauty pageants,€ said Lee. €œWe want society to accept transvestites and transgender people as productive individuals.
The initial heats were held in mid-September and on 19th September 2008, 53 contestants were reduced to 25.
Those 25 contestants are now in rehearsals of three hours minimum on alternate days.
Additionally, those who hope to reach the top 15 finalists have to have scored well with some form of €œtalent€.
Contestants can gain additional points by selling tickets for the heats leading up to the Pageant Final.
The contestants have to prepare their own costumes, based on the chosen €œTheme€ of the current year€™s pageant.
Half of the judges are Korean Nationals and other half are Filipino actors and actresses.
Aside from the much coveted title, the winner gets PHP 50,000 (US$1,000.00) as the Queen and the runners-up PHP 40,000 and PHP 30,0000.

Apparently whilst, in an Internet Cafe, trying to upload the photos taken during the October 5th appearance on the TV Program €œWalang Tulugan with the Master Showman€, a virus got onto the storage card and deleted all the photos.
The card was taken to a number of camera shops but no one could salvage the photos.
A new storage card was purchased and used today, Tuesday 7th October, at a rehearsal for tomorrows Press Conference at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, CCP Complex Roxas Boulevard , Pasay City , 1300 Manila, Philippines.
Unfortunately the photos are of extremely poor quality and low resolution.
That said, I have informed my correspondent that the quality of photographs is not good enough, and, luckily,
between now and 24th October, she should have plenty of opportunities to practice and to improve the quality and resolution of future photos!
