  • Thailand Celebrates Completion of Tallest Building

There is a new tallest building in Bangkok which is in the Silom area.
The MahaNakhon is a 77-story skyscraper which now over shadows the Baiyoke Sky Hotel which is now the second tallest building.
There will be a light show from the structure next week to celebrate the achievement.

I've been to the top of the Baiyoke, I guess I will have to check this one out. It doesn't look very stable though, does it?

MahaNakhon, the 77-story skyscraper that is the newest holder of the title of ‘Thailand’s tallest building,’ will host a light show next week to celebrate its completion.

It looks like it's right next to the Skytrain tracks. On Sukhumvit? Could this be what was a huge empty property that was at the first floor state last November-December two years ago. They sure build them fast in Bangkok. Faster than the USA. I remember at that time they were planting huge columns along the street fronting Yangee Hospital. Is that Skytrain section finished yet? Where is all this new money coming from? International companies? Can't be that many rich Thais to do it alone.

The new building is in Silom at the Chong Nonsi BTS Station on the Silom Line.
Silom is basically the main business district, where you find most embassies and head offices.
So they should have no problem renting out space.

Stuff gets built faster in Thailand because they don't have unions and they work 24 hours a day on most big buildings.
No worksite can afford to go 24 hours a day in North America, or they would go broke.
Probably more corners are cut to get it built too.

It was developed by a local Thai company.

It looks like they ran out of money when they got to the top and just left it unfinished

Someone probably did not order the right amount of building materials.
Sorry we are out of steel beams, you will have to improvise....
I wonder if the original plans looked like the final product.

It reminds me of the half finished death star.

Our government rules and regulations, in the US, make for a bureaucratic nightmare. That is why Russia and China are surpassing us in almost every area. We, in the US, are destroying ourselves. I'm quite sure that the funding comes from China and Japan as almost everything built in Thailand has some sort of Chinese and Japanese influence. Believe that the new high speed rail system will be built with Chinese money and engineering.

You not kidding. USA has too much bureaucracy all created under the guise of safety, terrorism, health, etc. We are papering ourselves to death and getting embezzled by the very people who created it. I have to laugh how Thailand is corrupt. We are even worse.

Actually, my good friend's son is a Masters from Harvard in Architecture and he designs and has colleagues that design all sorts of strange looking structures. However, they are all safe and structurally sound. I believe that building was designed to look exactly as it does and probably has specific engineering purposes in it's design.

Regulations are important. China was plagued by buildings falling, bridges collapsing because of non-enforcement or regulations that were too lax. Things have improved somewhat due to prosecution and sometimes execution of corrupt officials and company directors/owners - but fast construction is not a sign of progress if it fails in 5-10 years.

Not only that, we are falling way behind many other countries in infrastructure. Other countries can build infrastructure 10 times as fast as we can. I was in Japan quite a few years ago and everywhere I looked they were 10 to 20 years ahead of the US. I imagine today it is even worse. Even Thailand seems to make quicker and more progress than we do.
