Srinakharinwirot University to allow male students with sex-change operation to live in female dormitory


The Srinakharinwirot University will allow male students who receive sex-change operation to stay in its female dormitory, the rector said Saturday.

Dr Wiroon Tangcharone, rector of the university, said the students, who provide medical certificate that they have receive sex-change operation, would be allowed to live in female dormitory.

Wiroon said the university could not allow transvestite students to live in the female dormitory unless they have received sexual operation first.

He said students who have received the operations should not cause trouble in the dormitory.

Varsity rector throws open dormitories for transsexuals

Regulations to be eased if bill approved

Srinakharinwirot University has no objection to male transsexual students sharing the same dormitory with female students, rector Wiroon Tangcharoen said.

Mr Wiroon, also a member of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), has thrown his support behind a draft bill to allow transsexuals to change titles before their names from ''Mr'' to ''Ms'' or ''Mrs'' or vice versa.

The bill, proposed by NLA member Juri Vichitvathakarn, is to be tabled before the body for consideration.

The bill is supposed to be enacted in accordance with a provision in the draft constitution which recognises the basic rights and status of homosexuals.

The Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) previously agreed to give gay, lesbian, transgender and transvestite groups official status to end discrimination.

CDA members voted unanimously to include a reference to ''those of other sexual identities''. This was greeted with applause by gay rights activists.

Mr Wiroon said similar laws on the title before a person's name have been in force in other countries for years now.

He said there should be no problems if and when the proposed bill is passed into law. ''The university has nothing against male transsexual students staying in female dormitories on the campus.''

Regulations could be eased to permit this on condition they produce a medical document to prove they have undergone a sex-change operation, he said.

Social Development and Human Security Deputy Minister Poldej Pinprateep said it is understandable that transsexuals want to be officially addressed on identity cards as ''Ms'' or ''Mrs'' to avoid difficulty in everyday life.

However, arguments for and against the proposed bill should be given a good airing before it becomes law, he said.

They could even have 'visiting hours' for us ....... to help them wth their studies
