  • Bangkok late night venues

Sometimes when you live in Thailand, its easy to get blinkered about stuff - just one example was a visitor asking me the other night about 'after hours' options - after reading various boards, he was worried that basically everything in BKK shuts up shop at 1am and thats it.

So as a public service - here is the low down on whats happening and what to do if your a night owl.

First off, you need to understand BKK is split into different police districts - Nana for example is in a different district to Patpong and so is Soi Cowboy.   So despite these 3 entertainment areas being relatively close together, they have 3 different enforcing authorities.   To further compound this, Patpong is considered a special 'zoned' nightlife area where the other two are not.    That works in Patpongs favour as the bars are all allowed to open later officially, not just by someone turning a blind eye.    That means that if your planning a late night - Patpong is more consistent in its offering.

Kicking of with Nana area as its the prime hunting ground for the forum members.     Nana is going through some changes with the fairly recent changes at Lumpini police who cover this area.   Seemingly the top guy is adamant, no late opening will happen in his district and surprisingly, it has been working.   Even relatively famous late night venues have all had to close at 1am.    Q Bar, Bed Supperclub etc are all in the Nana district and these are closing at the same time as the rest of the district.    There has been sightings this week of a more relaxed attitude coming out from Lumpini, probably because they see its putting the bars in their patch at a huge disadvantage to other areas.   Maybe the extended opening will stay around, but for late night hunting and drinking it is unpredictable.

Soi Cowboy which falls under Thonglor police, is far more relaxed than Lumpini and 2am opening seems to be the norm, however that can change at any time.    Nightclubs in Thonglor tend to be open later as well.   So for example, Narcisus which is LB friendly, is closing circa 3.30am.  Narcisus is just off Sukhumvit Soi 23 - every cab driver around Sukhumvit will know it.    You will be looking at paying a 500b admission fee which includes 3 standard (beer basically) drinks.   Jack Daniels and soda runs around 180b which is not too bad for a late opening club.    Typically these clubs dont either water down or sell fake spirits - so what you order is what you get.

Patpong though probably remains the late night venue of choice.   Some of the gogo's are open as late as 3am, including KC3 and within 100m, you have countless other late night venues.   The majority of late opening venues are not at street level.      Kings lounge for example is above Kings Corner and just across from KC3 - its more of a late night bar than anything else - to call it a club is stretching it a bit, but in there favour are standard drink prices (100b beer) + admission price.

There is another place across from Foodland which is on the 4th floor of a building - just look where people are going to and you will find it easily enough.     Admission here I recall is about 250 baht and includes 2 drinks.   It is a proper club, albeit its pretty cheaply done but by that time, most people wont be caring about the decor.    Both places are good bets - they seem to be run well and dont fleece customers.

There are still countless more places up in the Thai dominated areas of Ratchada and into Thonglor proper.  Maybe someone else with experience of these places can give more comment as I dont really know these areas.     With the exception of Q-Bar - all these places are LB friendly and you often will find LB's freelancing in some of the venues (and especially KC3 LOL), however as a word of caution, you will likely be required to show picture ID to enter many clubs even if your 40 years old.

    Cheers

Nana Plaza last night was 2am

....which caused me a bit of a problem because I had hammered down 6 Bacardi Breezers (plus the earlier intake) between 12 and 12h50 thinking it was 1am closing.....this morning was not good

Pigdogg, they were still there the last week of April 2007, but not as many as in the past. Not sure why.

You didn't mention RCA in your posting Mardhi, so if you know any more info about that than I do, please share. But in all my trips I've usually made it out to RCA at least a few times. It seems like its a fairly good-sized complex with one main road and bars on both sides. The most popular club I've been to was called Slim at the time, although it may have changed. I'd say the crowd is majority Thai by far, but you'll be in good company with other farang tourists, maybe 10% or more of the crowd on any given night. The clubs there are LB friendly, don't have an entry fee to my recollection, and sell drinks and spirits around 150-250 baht depending on what you order. I think alot of the places closed at 2am or later when I was there, but I guess depending on what police district its in that could be different now. At any rate, I would recommend this place. A lot of cute thai girls and LBs looking around. I consistently ran into workers from Nana and Patpong, and usually when they were just there themselves looking to find customers in those clubs (or looking to find a nice Thai guy to bed).
I'm a rough-ridin', hootin' and hollerin', ladyboy lovin' cowboy! Bang bang yer dead!!!

                Dear Mardhi,

Great information. Having spent a couple of nights in BKK recently and will do again so in the near future this is invaluable.

                Regards.

(dummy_plug @ Jun. 18 2007,04:07) You didn't mention RCA in your posting Mardhi, so if you know any more info about that than I do, please share. I am not a great RCA fan as I always have a feeling whenever I have been there in the past that it comprises of two distinct groups of Thai's for the most part. They are either Hi-So's out in Mummies Porsche, or otherwise wannabe Gangsters. Thats probably a bad bias, but as I say, I never felt particularly comfortable in that environment. I am sure others have a lot more info and probably Monkeyman is as up to date as most on this area, although he seems to be focusing on Patpong as well.

                    Cheers

Real good info I would say too; covers nicely most places the vast majority would wander. It shouldn't be taken for granted how nice it is we can talk about 2 & 3am closings again because it wasn't that long ago 1am was toughly and broadly enforced.

Another thing patpong has going for it are its diverse late night disco's! Check out Lucifers for trance (indoors, upstairs down same side of street as KC3), radio city for live hip hop (outdoors) and there are many others. Nana "used to" have Angels disco but with such a stupid cover charge now I refuse to acknowledge its existence. 800 baht for 2 people to walk into that hole, gimme a break!

But there are venues that stay open even later and I'll narrate one venue. The places I go after the bars stay open all night long. That's right--closing in the morning 6-8am. It's the kind of thing where you know you've had a good night when you walk outside and are astonished it is light out (though seldom happens to me). They aren't pick up places, but rather where you bring your girl or group and hang out. These are karaoke venues; big dark rooms hidden in alley buildings with a dozen tables. The food is Thai, cheap, and excellent but you kinda have to know what you want as menu's are Thai. Drinks are those favored by the locals; Leo, Sang Som, 100 pipers pretty standard and usually several other choices. Ordering a giant feast and all you can drink is almost impossible to crack 1000 baht all night, more likely half that. Sometimes you can find groups of bargirls / ladyboys who go to these places to hang out after work though you couldn't count on it. They aren't for everyone, but I can stare at the videos to the songs all night long; they bring out every emotion and it's like you live each song in a never ending story. I can sing a bit too and when a farang picks up a mic and sings their songs, it can bring hearty applause right there in a place you might not hear applause the rest of the night. Almost never see other foreigners at these places. Most don't know about them, and those that do often don't care for them. Finding them is easy; your barfine will know.

The types of people you find there seem mostly working class, students, and bar workers. But reminds me once there was a group of tough looking guys though friendly enough next to my table when I had a Rainbow 3 girl with me. Did a few cross table cheers to them and late in the night the big guy among them told me they were off duty police and he was now my friend and if I ever needed anything he'd be there! That's part of the draw to me is being immersed with other Thai's enjoying life. Instead of being served by them you're in with them.

There is also an intermediate venue that is a more practical as a stepping stone to the former type places; big neon lit karaoke venues with english/chinese/japanese songs, readable menus, VIP rooms, early opening times. Though I have to say thankfully these have fallen out of favor for me as not only is the price typically high (maybe 500 baht *per hour* for the room for instance), but bill padding at these nicer type places is rampant unfortunately.

Keep the late night info's comin...

thanks mardhi for the info clears up alot of questions
