    Thai Lingo

Hmm was just thinking and a thought came to my head....we got forums just about covering all things LB...how about a forum or sub-forum, with a thai word or phrase a day..so we can all pick up a little bit of thai lingo, so we can better communicate with the girls...just a thought.

Thai is a tonal language so it would damn hard to pronounce correct what you read in latin letters.

You could better ask your gf (if you have one) to teach you Thai.

This one is easy to pronounce:

phom rak khun = I love you

If you want to learn Thai there is no better book than James Higby's Essential Thai.   The structure of the book is better in that it emphasizes the understanding of grammar and verb vocabulary prior to learning noun vocabs which you can memorize after learning the structure of the language and pronunciation.  Take that book to any local Thai temple and you will find at least one monk who speaks passable English who will teach you for free.  Did it for three years although I paid them back tenfold in errands back and forth to Thailand and purchasing a room full of statues and artifacts from Thailand and Laos.

Great resource Stogie! I must have missed this in my absence. Looks like a fun way for some of travelers to pick up a bit of Thai here and there.

I agree it is virtually useless to learn Thai using a transliteration as you are almost certainly saying it incorrectly.

Don't be discouraged, many basic phrases will be understood if the tones are wrong since they can be recognized by context. But regardless, Thai's will love you for trying; a hello here and thank you there will go a long way.

Yes it is true that the Thai's will like you for trying. They will even laugh and smile but this is their way of showing their appreciation at your attempt.

If have the time and patience it's worth while to learn the Thai alphabet then get your Thai girl friend to write out the words. Also a good book is Marie Helene Brown "Reading and Writing"; it's one of the best.

Have fun, that what it's all about.
