  • Midnight closing times?

this idea has been talked about for a while over there and now it looks like it may go through, part of the "social order" campaign they are running over there {I suppose having a country with over 800,00 prostitutes is not against the social order, but drinking a beer after midnight is a really bad thing}.

    for all us night owls, this is an incredibly bad thing. some guys on the BKK tonight forum were talking about this and saying basically that they didn't care; they can get their drinking done and have a girl in their bed way before midnight so it doesn't matter what times the bars closed. But some of us have to live there parts of the year and would like to actually, you know, have fun? this was my reply to some nonchallant posts I saw on that forum;

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
it seems as though many of the guys who posted replies to my other post were vacationers who are just spending time in Thailand for 2 or 3 weeks at a time; the typical response to the early closings was ' so what? I can meet a girl before midnight and have her in my room for a screw easily by then'. that's true, but what about the rest of us?

a good many of the readers here live in BKK or are like me and split their time between BKK and somewhere else. I have a place in the city and to me it is just appaling that I may have to go home now at 12 or even 1 AM. I think if the people who don't care about this had it apply to the city that they live in like we do, they may care more; imagine if all the bars in your cities closed at 12? you would just be starting to go out for the night and it would be time to go home.

lets remember that we are talking about ALL bars here, not just the girly bars in NEP and Patpong and Cowboy, where indeed you can meet and screw a hottie as early as 7 or 8 PM. But I am still relatively young at 38 and like to go out to popular watering holes like Hollywood, Q-Bar, and RCA and Khoa San Road; as you know in any big city, it's not fashionable or even sensible to show up at places like this before 11AM or midnight because they are still empty. What will happen to those places now? Local Thai's and even local ex-pats like me will not be willing to go out dancing and imbibing at 9PM and heading back to your apartment at 1215, bored and depressed.

remember, not everyone who wants a later closing time hangs out in go-go bars. I spend my fair amount of time in them, but this stupid law will much more effect the ability of local people to go out and have fun. seriously....I mean even in boring old brahmin Boston it's 2AM, and just about everywhere else you go in the world [or later].

lighten up, Thaksin; we love your country and you are trying to drive us all away.

    Jon

Its hard to think they could close ALL the bars and nightclubs at midnight. Are they into SELECTIVE inforcement? What about all the discos and pubs the professionals and younger folks (aka students) frequent? Seems a bit far fetched to me but so did closing down all of Manila and they did that, didnt they?

When they enacted the 2am closing just about every club followed the rules. Unfortunately the same will happen with the new closing time. I have been to some after hour clubs, but they all suck and are not worth it.

This SUCKS, like Jon I like going to RCA and some other places. I even have my own bottle at some clubs.

There are only two things even moderately good about this, one is hanging outside Nana at midnight....buyer's market. The other is that the Election here is early 2005 and I know a lot of locals who will vote against the currect gov't soley on this issue.

Unfortunately people, it's worse than you think. The social reform wing of the Thai rak Tai party is pushing for ten pm closing of all entertainment areas, and bars, nation wide. See the archives....http://www.bangkokpost.com This has been brought about by many issues. One of the most important being the road toll. This is, compared to the rest of the civilised world, of gargantuan proportions. 65,000 severly injured in the new year holiday period alone, is just horrific.
Futher issues involve the escalating rate if divorce in Thai nationals, this in turn has put a large strain on the Thai court system. The government anti corruption board is also behind the push, as far too many of "official" people are involved in the night entertainment scene, and it is seen as a backward step for a progressive government that is trying to portray a a metropolis that is free from corruption. Now before you throw up, please realise that the current prime minister is an ex policeman from Chiangmai, who has made several fortunes by being completely "honest" The first of which was the cement industry. Closely following that came Shinawat holding Co. which owns AIS (one time monopoly of mobile communications) as well as "Shinsat" the monopoly of satelite broadcasts. Further to that he branched out into silk and wood exports (Shin export Co.) All in all he is a complete power broker. As Thailand's richest citizen, he really doesn't need the job, however, it's a job that satisfies his ego, and he will win! As to those of you that say that the forthcoming election will bring changes...Ten million baht is a safe bet that he will be returned with an increased majority. Sorry fellas, but that's a fact. No matter how hard the Nana guys whinge, they are a drop in the ocean caompared with the general poulace. Sorry to say, but the land of smiles will still provide all the necessary goods, but at a price.....Tha Cynic

What I'm hoping for is that Thaskin's party loses its 2/3 majority in the election. Right now he rules by decree since there is no opposition in parliment.

But even that is a long shot, the gov't wants to clean up Thailand's image; eliminate the corruption associated with the night life economy; force Thais to work harder party less and change the Tourist trade to be more upscale (i.e. yacht owners not backpackers).

All of that adds to up to a shitty time for those of us who like to go out drinking to 2am.

          BAH...I'm so pissed.

Nothing will change here, especially in tourist places... Can you honestly see Nana or Pattaya closing at midnight? Get real!

We all saw them closing at 2am - something which was beyond any imagination even 5 years ago and Fucksin gives a shit about Nana tourists. Get them out is what he wants to achieve primarily. And you can turn around the image of a country with draconic measures. It happened for instance to Mallorca. They just raised the prices, closed the some of the bars in the major hotspots and built out of a cheap tourism loction an upscale destination for rich fuckin' Germans. The whole process lasted around 10 years, but it worked.
Closing at midnight is definitely a show-stopper for me! I lived in Spain for 3 years and I can remember that at midnight the clubs havent even opened their gates. People go for dinner between 220 - 230 and to the bars not before 2am. That's fun lifestyle and the bloody 2am closing in LOS pisses me off already big time! If he's really gonna do that, then I'm outta here and over to the PI, Bali or fuckin' Cambo. Anything better than Fucksin country. The only thing I hope that others will do the same and someone pushes this pisser a fuckin Stinger in his fat arse and presses the button!

yes, I am very angry about this also, to be honest. world-class cities just are NOT supposed to close the doors to their bars at midnight; that is unheard of. I don't go out to discos or Khoa San all that often but when i do i don't like to be told when I have to go home.

Bali......go there if you like nightlife......there are places that don't even OPEN until 3AM and they go until 6 or 7, with people dancing on the beach like a bunch of lunatics. in Thailand now people will be home and in bed way before that if this INSANE law goes through.
