I agree with most of opinions here but I am not sure "Thailand" is any special here. If I was a Thai and someone in America told me there were some great opportunities to invest in an illegal business I should exercise same amount of caution.
Any retail business requires you to be physically there 100% of time, and requires the most trust among staffs. Many many restaurants are just family business. Why? cash. In retails, cash is abundant. In the office you can't imagine your boss putting a camera in your cubical, can you? When I had my restaurants I put camera everywhere, and someone still manage to steal money from me - I had no evidence but I was pretty sure, so I found an easy excuse to fire him.
The reason I want to stress that this is not a "Thai" only problem - might just because I kind of want to rant. For all the money Thai business has to pay to mafia/bribery we have a "legal" form of it in America. The stubid insurance you have to buy - In San Diego you PRE-PAy sales tax before you can open business. Imagine that ...

People talking about "buying" a bar are really talking about a SHORT TERM LEASE. You fork out millions for the privilige of operating a bar that loses money or is taken from you in short order.

Before handing over any substantial amount of money in Thailand, check it out with 2 independent lawyers. What you will find should be enough to scare you away from such thoughts for good. Many know the romantic dream of foreigners wanting to put out a shingle in Thailand and are laying in wait with a trap just for you. A 'thinking businessman' wouldn't do it... but for the jokers who do; it's just a step towards eventual suicide. Here's how it works...

A Euro-loser has a reasonable amount of money from his work or pension but is too stupid or foul looking to live in his own country.

He has researched Pattaya on the internet and seen all the streets paved with glitter that has fallen off some hookers face.

He ignores everones advice and decides to move to Pattaya and falls in love with the first pudgy 25 year old skank that pays him any attention.

In an effort to impress this skank he gets easily talked into buying into a bar and for the next few weeks he sits there, happily getting drunk as lord and master of all he surveys, while all his Thai workers and the skank who is now running his empire are busy funneling away all the stock and cash... and laughing at him to his face.

In a moment of sobriety (usually after a bout of food poisoning) he realises that there is little to no money in the bank, the bar is half stocked and the darn thing isn't making the money that it should be.

He falls out with the skank and they have a terrible row and she leaves in tears.

Hours later he is cornered by 3 blokes and given a hiding that he'll never remember and when he gets out of hospital he takes stock of what he has done wrong in the last year or so and even the last 50 years or so. It's becoming clear that he's just another loser with money burning a hole in his pocket so he decides to dump the bar, cut his losses and get drunk...

This upsets the skank and all the hangers on-ers who haven't yet milked him completely dry, so they arrange a party in his 10th floor one room shithole apartment and while he's really really drunk they help him commit suicide by dumping him off the balcony.

The Pattaya City News photographers are there before he even hits the deck and some nice pics preserve the memory of this expat loser for the next week or so...

Nope... this is the large ladyman in her mid 30s (I'm guessing) and NOT who you are thinking of. There was a mamasan who used to flit around the Nana bars but I haven't seen her for a while... probably still at VooDoo...

I think you are referring to Bee, who went to be Mamasan in a GG bar near to Obsessions (Hollywood I think), and has now reappeared as one of the mamasans in Cascades.  Good company, and we have shared a few tequilas (but nothing else  )

A friend who lived in Thailand for a number of years and was the CFO of a International Thai business likes to tell the story of a Thai owned bar. This place became very popular very quickly with the usual Thai celebrities and hi-so crowd.
Needless to say this attracted higher ups in the police who were not getting paid off.
 Soon the harrasement started underage drinkers, and othere illegal activity was discovered ( all planted by the police). The Thai ownwers were faced with a decision close for a while and lose your business or except some new hidden partners and remain open.
  Well they excepted what appeared to be the lesser evil hidden partners. In a years time all of the profits were sucked out by the new partners and the bar was closed.
  Even being Thai and paying off the police are no  guarantees of a sucessful business.
