If you choose to live like a foreigner in Thailand e.g eat western food, stay in western style accomodation except to pay the most........no secret in that.

Spend time in Thailand and try living and eating like a Thai then you pay less

Have Thai friends that can show you how to live like a Thai then you pay less again..........

and finally if you are Thai then you pay less again

It really is more of a scale. I enjoy mixing it up living a simple life with the ocassionally luxury.

Erm... the thread about the percentage of girls on drugs is just guess work, mate... and there's a difference between the tiny amount of girls "messed up" on drugs and those who take drugs infrequently and another disparity of opinion about the percentage of drug free girls.

I'd agree that some girls take drugs and drink alcohol. but I think that to suggest it is over half the girls working in Nana is probably not an accurate assesment of current levels of drug abuse.

But that's just my opinion and like others posting here, is not based on anything scientific.

But back to the thread...

If you think that visits to Thailand are a game of one-up-man-shipabout winning and losing then you are probably not living here. If you spend all your time in tourist resorts and the tourism areas of large cities then it's true that you may well be the target of ongoing campaigns by locals to fleece you at every opportunity.

But in the same way that Acapulco isn't really Mexico, Nana Plaza isn't really Thailand!

Ask any long term resident and they will tell you that they have long since avoided getting into situations and places where he puts himself at risk of being a victim of being ripped off. Even when they do try it on, they quickly become unstuck by a savvy expat resident and most scammers can spot 'marks' anyway and don't even look to people who know what they are about for their cons.

The problems almost all 'farangs' face when they are in Thailand is one of dis-orientation because of a number of factors... jet lag, language, weather, demands by cabbies and hookers, loud music, drug or/and alcohol use, etc...

You constantly have to keep your guard up when in any tourist enviroment. If you put down your phone for a minute and turn around it will be gone. If you are not sure how to say 'No!' then you are actually saying 'Yes!' and if you are drunk then you are just asking for trouble.

But in the end - the benefits of being a tourist in Thailand outway the hassles. If you really are jaded by your experiences here then I suspect you have forgotten WHY you came in the first place.

yes indeed everyone will get ripped off to a certain degree. Basicly it is buyer beware. But with that said you can choose how and when this occurs. On some occasions it is to your advatage to get "ripped off" As stated above, letting a BG "take advantage" of you can pay interest. There is no question you are a stranger in a strange land and they have more ways to get over on you than you can possibly imagine. So basicly the best thing to do is to avoid really serious rip offs and just accept that the little crap will be just the price of admission. Lets face it most of us get to go back to countries where we can recoup those loses in a day or twos wages. Remember that it is just this kind of corruption and petty actions that keep LOS from ever becoming a first world country. And we all know that would be the end of cheap good times in LOS.

Why is it they win and you lose. So some bar girl says short time is 3000bhat and you go for it and later you learn it should have been 1500bhat. What did you lose some dignity some face because at the time you paid what was ok.

A few years ago I met a nice Danish couple and they were concerned that they had paid to much for some tailored clothing. I says did it seem like a good deal at the time they say yes. I says enough said forget it. If you look long enough and hard enough you will find a better deal.

Does that mean you lose and they win only if you think so.

i think actually the thais loose alot, alot of inhumanity in thailand, alot of scum be careful yall. but its a fun place to be, a super fun place, just pay the 20 bucks for a girl,, when theres drama your always just buying stamps, show no anger, and just humour their greng jai bullshite that saves face n inhibits alot of progression n self esteem for themselves n their people.... viva la thailandia.. peace yall.
