Last week I talked to the very nice Anne of Obsessions.

She was very depressed. She said she was 26 and "so old" you could see it in her eyes, and all the new girls were 18, 19, 20, and so pretty.

I've been noting that over the years, and I think a lot of the bar girls go through a very hard time starting around 26. They've lived a life where they were sought after, adored by guys like us, have made very good money, and then fairly suddenly, they aren't and cannot make money anymore.

The only choices at that point are go home to Ma and Pa in the village after years in the big city (yawn), buy a salon if they have enough cash (unlikely), or try and work at a cosmetics counter for 1/5th the salary in a shopping mall (until how long?).

Not a pretty life.

Now you understand their determination to find a boyfriend to "take care" of them while they are still young.

Actually a number of ladyboys from Malaysia and Singapore head for places like the UAE, UK, France and Ireland. And they're in their early 30s (although they claim to be younger). They can earn between 200 to 400 Euros per hour.
They do however, speak a fair bit of English and before that they get their photos taken professionally and use them on free escort web sites to advertise.

Yes, it is true and I think that anyone in the P4P business (ggs included) faces this problem. They can only cash in on their looks for a certain time, and then their income levels fall drastically.

For some it is 25 for others 30, but generally I would say mid 20's is the turning point for most - especially now with so much competition coming in by the busloads from the provinces. Gunslinger's report is quite eye opening, with the large numbers of lbs he has seen.

Really the key for any of these lbs is to somehow get out of the p4p business, no easy feat. Most jobs will never pay anything remotely close to what they earn in the bar/escort. The smart ones will indeed save enough to open their own business, but these are uncommon.

Also for some reason, the lbs seem to be the ones who support their families more, more than a daughter or son. I am not sure why that is, but certainly it adds additional burdens on them too.

This is sometimes referred to as their "shelf life". Bar girls have the same issue of course. Some fish bowls even have mandatory retirement at age 25. But surprisingly when Thai's are youngish, they are aware of their unique position and thus work in the bars without delay, knowing it is sort of a temporary career with the best financial upside they will have a chance at in their lives. And for ladyboys, may be the only chance in their life at earning enough for the ops they want. I do feel for ladyboys who become older because it just gets harder for them to look as feminine as they once did.

It's no secret that LBs struggle for acceptance in society. This struggle extends to acceptance by their own family. Especially daddy.

Bringing in the bath is their way of sometimes buying that acceptance and 'love'.

Unfortunately, those looking to snare a bf or 'husband' often spread themselves so thin that when they get close, they burn some guy with their lies.

Keeping one's options open is understandable. On the other hand, many don't realise that it's a very fine line and they have more to gain than lose by playing the patience game and cultivating a single relationship rather than casting a wide net.

(Short version : they all say they are looking for nice/true/honest guy. But most wouldn't know him if they fell over him).

I'll be 30 in a few years and I definately feel old. I wish I discovered LOS much earlier. It's not necessarily lb's but I guess it's magnified due to their profession.

It seems a bit of a stretch to extrapolate one brief encounter with one individual, who was probably looking for a sympathy bar-fine at the end of the month, at one moment into some sort of theory or diagnosis? Without spending a lot (potentially hundereds of hours) time with an individual I believe it will be challenging to get to the root cause of any depression. Further, given the way these gals self-medicate their endocrinological systems to the boundries, I think it is impossible to determine the cause of their present emotional state? Tomorrow she could be happy as a clam.

I'm surprised so many consider the end LB prostitutes' career here in Thailand to be some sort of death sentence. It is also surprising to hear how much people think LB's dread a return to their home and family. IME, nothing could be farther from the truth. The family is the core of a person's identity here, and the only reliable support system, so a return is not a negative.

Applying western experiences and values here is usually a pointless exercise.

But I'm sure ziggy has done plenty of research in his time  Also his use of the term 'depression' was in the loose sense I believe.

In any event, even without the hormones, I think trying to fathom these creatures, who are, after all, not only LBs but Thai, is really a trip into the Twilight Zone

Maybe not quite on point but I've often wondered what happens to "old" ladyboys. I'm particularly curious about whether any of them choose to remain pre-op and uncut forever, or whether the ones who don't revert back to being gay guys inevitably get cut?
