            Maka Bucha (Pronounced makka butcher) Day falls on the full moon of the third lunar month, usually toward the end of February.

            "Maka Bucha" is the name of a month in the lunar calendar used in ancient India, (as are "Visakha" and "Asalaha"€”two other holidays). The word "Bucha" signifies worship. So Maka Bucha means the worship in the month of Maka. Maka Bucha Day is also known as the day of the Fourfold Assembly, a special meeting which took place at the Bamboo Grove (Veluvana) and which had four extraordinary features, namely:

            €¢ It was the full moon day of the month Magha.
            €¢ 1,250 monk disciples assembled to see the Buddha, spontaneously, without any prearrangement.
            €¢ All these monks were Arhants, those who have attained the highest level of enlightenment.
            €¢ All of them were the Buddha's direct disciples having been ordained by the Buddha himself.

            Local Thai temples in Bangers will all celebrate this special occasion;
            Wat Thai DC on February 16;
            Wat Pasantidhamma on February 16;
            Wat Tummaprateip on February 23.

            Here in Bangkok the governor of the Thai capital has instructed city authorities to avoid promoting Valentine's Day and instead celebrate Maka Bucha!

            On the orders of Governor Samak Sundaravej, only one district of Bangkok - Bang Rak, or love district - will hold celebratory activities on Feb 14.

            'We don't want foreign culture to have too much influence on Thai people,' said Mr Natthanon Thavisin, permanent secretary of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. 'We also have Maka Bucha as an important day in February.'

            Due to the rising popularity of Valentine's Day in Thailand, Bang Rak district has seen a surge in marriages on the day and has even begun offering prizes to couples choosing to tie the knot then!

            According to the Bangkok Post, over 1,500 couples are expected to marry at the office this year, with 10 marriage certificates made of gold and worth 5,000 baht (S$200) each up for grabs as prizes.

            Anyway, everyday is 'loveday' here!

                To put it simply, either live as a splendid monk or if you can't build up kammic credit while you live till you reach Nirvana or to be technical "nibbana" . Through your many lives you keep saving - the great thing is you can be reincarnated as many times till you eventually achieve it !! What a great religion.

                I quote my guru Richard Totman;

                " The person , or his or her inner soul, is subject to an indefinate number of reincarnations-rebirths-in different forms. He gains kamma, a kind of metaphysical credit, through the worthiness and selflessness of his deeds and the serenity of his everyday demeanour. Conversely he loses it, or gains negative kamma,through yielding to and indulging carnal cravings and worldly living.

                Kamma is therefore a kind of spiritual bank account with entries representing credits and debits. There are many ways of gaining credit and avoiding debt and these are laid down in the forty-five volumes of the The Tipitaka, the basic scriptural canon of Buddhism. The most effective way of gaining credit is by becoming a monk. If sufficient kammic credit is accumulated through the persons life or lives, that person attains the ultimate state of nibbana- literally the extinction of suffering - so that reincarnations cease and they become one with nature and the spiritual dimension and achieve the state of Enlightenment. "

                Thanks Mr Totman - I really like that guy.

                Does that answer your question Beef ? ( Keep your eyes peeled for BSE bro' )

                My question to Stogie is ,

                If I was reincarnated as a Dragonfly would I automatically be in nibbana at the end of my life ? As you know the lifespan of a dragonfly is a day and their life is so simple; they are born, eat,procreate then die. Since I fulfill everyday serenity and selflessness as a dragonfly it would follow that I've achieved kammic credit and would be reborn as another "good" dragonfly because how could I be a "bad" dragonfly ?
