  • Changes to Thailand cell phone numbers?

Sorry guys if I am behind on this and it has already been discussed, but is it true that ALL Thailand cell numbers now need to have an 8 added after the leading zero?

For example, before if I were to call Talisha from outside Thailand I would have dialed 011-661-659-3728, or inside Thailand it would have been 01-659-3728, now is it correct that I would dial 011-6681-659-3728 from outside Thailand and 081-659-3728 from inside Thailand?

I had it explained like that to me, or at least that was how I understood it, can some of you more cognescent fellows tell me if that is all right?

I have dialed some cell phones recently the old way, and they still worked whereas others I would get a recording about adding an 8 after the leading zero. Then I was told that all the cell phones numbers can work now with the 8 inserted, though some don't seem to need it yet, but I guess all will need it eventually?

    Hi Lefty,

Basically everything you outlined sounds spot on to me !

I've also noticed that particular numbers are still working without the 8 added, whereas other require the 8 to be inserted to function.

Certainly simpler to add the 8 to all your Thai numbers and then its guaranteed to be right.

    Cheers

Yes - you are behind the times!

But don't worry - if you dial the old number you'll get a message telling you what the error is...

If the message is in Thai then stay on the line, because they will follow with an English language message telling you what the problem is.

Thanks so much guys. Glad to have it figured out. It is funny how the old way still works sometimes. I called a friend up in CM yesterday who had the old 01 prefix, and I just dialed his number the old way and got through, which surprised him b/c he said I had to insert the 8, and when I told him on that call I didn't do it, it even surprised him b/c he was fairly certain only the new way would work on his number now. It must be hit and miss not only from number to number but from time to time on some numbers.
I'll just start adding the 8 and hope to be ok.

An 01 prefix is a land line so it wouldn't be affected by the 08 changes to the mobile networks... I don't think your friend understood the changes either!

I'm not so sure about that. Look up top at Talisha's cell phone # that I used as an example. That is the actual number I have called her on many times. Before the change her number was 01-659-3728 and it was her cell.
