(stogie bear @ Sep. 21 2006,02:28) Well the law states clearly that Bank accounts can NOT be offered to people on tourist visas, but I got one so there you have it! TIT! This is Thailand!

You can get a savings account with ATM cards etc with Bangkok Bank. I took Kui with me to fight my cause for me and we eventually beat them into submission but it wasn't easy! I had head office on the phone to the branch in Seacon Square and I printed off info from there web site to back me up also!
Great, thanks Stogie.I'll try that.Hope i can find the website. Will look for you in Big Dogs if you're around Oct.5-26th.

      Bangkok Bank

Expatriates need their passport and work permit.
Their website has been updated and it looks like they may be enforcing the changes, but as we say... TiT! Anything can happen!

another alternative is to join Thailand Elite for 1,000,000 baht and get special 5 year visa which gives you 90 day visas that can be renewed for 1,900 baht without leaving the country! You get new 5 year visa automatically... the membership is for lifetime and is backed by thai govt/tourist buerea. It also entitles you to play golf at 30 courses in thailand for caddy fee, free limo to and airport for international flights, cheap medical, pacific club membership... etc, etc. etc... best investment I ever made...

The initial post is pretty easy to follow but all the replies only make it confusing.

Thats the problem with Thai Visa - some of the topics are good - but generally whatever gets said gets lost when some armchair barrister decides he knows best and puts out a complete load of shit.

                Cheers

Just when you think the Thais can not out-dumb themselves...

I'm sure Cambodia will welcome all of those kicked out with open arms.

Let Thailand feel the crunch of the 10s of 1000's of Falang not pouring money back into the Thai economy.

And to think that Thailand was JUST taken off the "third world country" list.

imho cambo doesnt even reach thailand over my sneakers when it comes to sanuk. very limited options. its good for a few days and for the "adventure", but stay there month after month in that 3rd world dump, would be very frustrating. last time i was there, there was only one atm - a swiss bank that only accepted cardholders of that bank.
when that said, i had good fun in sharkeys and martinis. entered sharkey when they played "holiday in cambodia" with dead kennedys. and jeez, those vc girls were ugly. the darker and more quiet cambo girls were in another league. dull in bed though.
k11 was a real dump, and ileft when two girls not more than 14-15 offered their services. there was also the scum of white folks roaming this street. been there done that. would i go back. no, would rather stay in pi where its also ladyboy action.
another thing which is comfortable in los compared to cambo and laos is there is no so much hassle. in both laos and cambo you get hassled for dough all the time. everyone want a cut. in cambo if you dont have a steady driver, the driver takes 50-100% if you even enter a pharmacy. the only cheap thing in cambo is the girls, 5-10$, but the rest is cheaper in thailand. and the food in thailand is so much better too and more available. in laos they have great food too, but not nearly as many street stalls as thailand, which surprised me abit.

It would seem that getting a 60day tourist visa from the consulate in your own country and then extending that the allowable 30 days is the way to go, because who would not have to spend the 90 days out of the country. If you want to stay more than 30 days this would be the appropriate approach. If you wanted to stay over 90 days then the longer visas should be applied for like the retirement visa or non immigrant visa.

                          Two lessons...

                          1. Get travel insurance that covers motor vehicle accidents
                          2. Never sign for Power of Attorney.
