DP is an American born Japanese - but I am not sure how many generations.

I do recall seeing something on CNN quite a while ago of clubs where Japanese women would go to relax and "unwind". It was not unusual for the club to have foreign hosts (men), as Japanese men were not paying attention to them as they wanted. Now how far they went in paying for the attention of these foreign hosts was not mentioned. It would not be too much stretch of the imagination for a reasonably good looking foreign guy who treats women nicely to get paid for that in Japan.

For god's sake man. Any person with a heartbeat and a mediocre command of the English language can be a conversation partner in Japan. Yes, they most often get paid, you're providing a service after all duh - but to have the illusion that they are paying you for your looks or charming personality is plain silly. How do I know this? When I take business trips to Japan I sometimes stay in Tokyo for 3-4 weeks at a time and make side cash as a conversation partner for my friend's English academy on the weekends. Sure, I get a fee from the "students", but I don't kid myself into thinking I'm some kind of super stud. I guess I could prey on my students...but nah, I'm not cool with that.

But instead, many of the foreign "teachers" in Asia do that and quite indiscriminately and unprofessionaly.
I've a french friend, as an example to say, who had several problems with his female students at an UNI in Hong Kong and keep fooling around and making a mess

you say you work for an english academy? sounds like a school in some kind of school building. also, that's a different deal. i've worked in those before. you get numbers and a chance to meet them later, but yeah, that's a different deal. basically people go there to learn english most of the time. not like the private sessions girls pay for.

by the way dummyplug, they're MOST CERTAINLY, very often, paying for your looks and charming personality, including in the schools.

I worked for the biggest and most succesful school in japan. do you know the name?? it was and still is, common practice to use good looking charming white guys with blue eyes and blonde hair for sales. so much so that other teachers would complain about it.
blacks weren't commonly used, and people of asian descent almost never. I worked as a supervisor their and i often had to sit and listen to this one american guy whose grandparents came from japan complain about how he never got sales duties. also a friend of mine who's black used to complain about it especially because he was a senior teacher and a lot of inexperienced guy used to get sales duties / demo lessons over him.

the staff used to tell me they wanted me to train other people who looked "kakoi" (cool) for sales. anyone who wasn't that good looking would be way down on the list.

outside the schools, with the private sessions, looks and personality are pretty much the ONLY thing that count. there's no teaching going on.

o yeah, and im sorry for saying we talk and i mostly listen. that was a bit vague. i should have said we have a conversation. that's so much clearer. thanks dummyplug. i can see why you were so confused that at first you said it would never happen and now you say you actually do that kind of work.
