Before anyone gets too paranoid about the murder rate in Thailand have a look at this website Murders by country
The murder rate for the US is 1 for every 15800 people/year.
For Thaland it's 1 for every 12179 people/year.
BUT - what is missed out is about half the 'murders' in Thailand occur on the Thai/Burma (Myanamar) border.
There is little doubt that the Thai police/military are involved in a significant proportion of these. The remainder are turf wars between drug lords and bandits.
So take out 2500 and you come up with 1 for every 23700 people/year.
I'd rate Pattaya as one of the more dodgy places Bangkok I would say is fairly safe.
I'm sure someone will argue with me about the figures - but I have not just made them up.
Interestingly the murder rate for Indonesia is 1 for every 93900 people/year. That's about 25% better than most of Europe, Canada and Australia - which I would consider safe countries.

Pedants rule, OK. Or more precisely, exhibit certain of the conventional trappings of leadership.

And of course u would beleive a country such as Indonesia who invade innocent nations and kill thousands of their own. Of course we would agree with a nation who just let a murderer out of jail who organised the Bali bombings and killed over 200 Australians.
The reported murder rates released from Inodnesia would not be worth the paper they are written on. They also realeased their Aids rate as 3 died last year mmmmmmmm I think u get my point.

Hello Vangough05,
I admit I'm surprised at the figures - they are allegedly from the CIA factbook.
But even if you treble the number they still come out well down the scale per capita.
The one thing is that the possesion of guns by the ordinary population is illegal in indonesia. That's probably because of fears that the population would rise up and overthrow the government.
Also guns are relatively expensive compared to the average wage.
The countries with the highest rates are those where gun ownership is legal or is totally out of control.
Guns don't kill people - people do
I'm well aware about the terrorists - but despite the headlines terrorists rarely kill that many people.
Don't take that as condoning terrorism - I have seen enough in my time to have a total hatred of these F*#@ers!
