Getting back to the Linda's Bar story, I used to go in there for a drink and a fumble especially when Ex used to hang out there...Does anyone know either of the two arrested LB's ? Also, I wonder if the victim is a member of this board.

I am afraid the clueless & unaware wonder around the world in ever increasing numbers, i see them all the time on my numerous travels, just waiting to be robbed. I have been traveling to Asia & South America for over 25years & can count the muggings / steamings on one hand. Some people just invite trouble.  

Anyone who thinks they are going to get fair treatment off the local police in a foriegn country are living in cloud cuckoo land themselves, especially Asia & Latin America. The Thais will always adjust things so that the whole story doesn't come out or put them in a bad light, face saving exercises. They will of course also try to make it look like they are doing something about the problems so the tourists $$$'s keep coming.

You are back to "money number one". You are just an ATM machine to have money taken off you, doesn't really matter how. Your job is to try & make it in your favor & reduce the risk factor. Information not provided in holiday brochures or the misleading lonely planet books. I love the one liners about Pattaya's night life in holiday brochures, "vibrant & robust nightlife".

A little common sense will ensure your visits to foriegn lands are pleasant enough.

it also helps to work under the assumption that you will be pickpocketed or mugged.

Lock up your wallet and passport.

Put only the amount of money you will need in your front pockets, best bet is split it between both pockets.

Bring more than one ATM card, keep them seperate, lock one up. Avoid carrying and using credit cards.

If you are suspicious or in a very crowded place (like a chatuuchak), walk with your hands in your pockets.

I, Unfortunately, have been pickpocketed in Thailand. But all they got was 3000 Baht, an old mobile, and an ATM card. It wasn't pleasant but it could have been a whole lot worse.

At Hi Boss when you get up in the rooms they tell you to put your wallet, cell phone, and camera in the rooms locker on the wall while you're in the shower... a "really secure" tin can on the wall with a little baggage lock.

She told me too that it's very secure because I will have the only key that opens it in all of Thailand.

Don't leave anything in the short time rooms! Take everything with you into the shower. A plastic bag from 7/11 is a good way to keep your stuff from getting wet.

I have to agree with Stogie, watch out for the Shit-Holes.
I love PTT/LOS however you have to watch out at all times. I must comment how funny it looks during the police investigation, there is the farang between the two suspects. What's up with that?

Gotta say I grew up in a big city in the USA and Canada and never had a problem being streetwise.  Many of the ideas... like, not taking a wallet and using an old cell are great.  I also, love the idea of splitting up the cash, I never thought of that one...and an extra credit card sounds smart. Love that tin can locker geez, they could steal the whole dam thing

I gotta tell you guys even with my streetsmarts, I am not digging the idea of going it alone in LOS for my first time next month
I am a bit nervous and unsure of where to go and what to do, feeling like I am going to stick out etc...
It seems best to travel in a group there and going alone leaves many doubts

I've been here over 4 years, and had trouble only twice. Thats a pretty low average for a big city (and doing the shit I do).

Thailand really is safe if you you use 1/2 your brain. Allowing yourself to get groped by a bunch of skanks on Beach Road Pattaya and your are ASKING for trouble.

Personally I think Thailand is one of the safest countries to go as a foreigner.  In Bangkok and most cities in Thailand I don't have any particular worries.

As always a little common sense goes a long way.
Stay where there are people  -  not difficult in BKK  
Stay where it's well lit  -  again no problem.
Don't advertise you have money.
If it don't look good  -  walk away.

I've only had one attempt made on me in 30 years and I have been to some really dodgy places.
That was in Mexico  -  long story but suffice to say I was to meet someone (a fucking idiot!) who decided not turn up and did not tell me.
I stayed in the same place too long and got the wrong sort of attention.
I did say attempt  -  he demanded money in poor English thinking I was an American.   Everytime he tried  -  I answered in French.
He was so stupid he gave up in the end and walked away.

My suggestions for London are outside Tower Hill underground station and the ticket concourse of Victoria underground station. Both are good day or night

I love that trick. I do it all the time here, pretend you don't understand a damn word they are saying.
I usually end up using it with taxi drivers, many times they tell me traffic is bad and they don't want to continue...I just play dumb, maybe mutter something in German (which I do not speak).

Its hard not to break out laughing, as they continue to try and tell me get out, and I keep acting out a monty python skit.
