The idea of lighter skinned being the colour of powerful or rich people who live and work in doors, whilst darker skins is that of the toiling masses labouring in the fields in the sun.

I agree with Snejana. I would also add What about in Africa or Aboriginal culture? Everyone there is dark so what difference is lighter shade of skin prove? It does not carry extra status. In Africa the bigger you are, means more status because you can afford to eat well! That is why they prefer bigger women not stick insects They dont have a prejudice/preferance for lighter skin shades. It was introduced with the apartheid style colonial rule and enforced labour. In Africa naturally light people, ie albinos do not survive to old age. So was not a good sign.

The point made by Tomcat about Cuba whichs is applicable to Brazil and Latin America is a legacy of the divide and rule, denying human rights to certain groups, such as the blacks and native indigenous peoples. Remember the slave trade existed for centuries there. The dominant group who had power were Europeans. That is why the standards of beauty are European as seen in magazines. The same can be seen Jamaica and elswhere in the Caribbean because the fashion and beauty industry are controlled by European or Middle Easterns. They dictate what they want. So the point that whites always rise to the top in countries of different races is naive if not patronising or racist.
