From what I have observed being with black friends of mine is that the Thais gauge their response on where you are from. Once they know you are an American or European you are fine. But if they think you are African or Black-Arab they will treat you differently.

Thais scare easily and being black can be a handicap in some situations here. As can being crippled, Indian, too tall, hairy... you get the idea!

What about being ugly?   On the other hand, you seem to do OK there!

I'd agree with Snick. I just came from a massage place. Two very large black guys from New Orleans passed by, and the girls somewhat mobbed them. They seemed like nice, friendly guys. No chips and thus a warm welcome. If anything, I'd say the girls were quite attracted to the guys (more than this homely white guy writing). Unfortunately, Arabs have a bad rep with the ladies, probably not really warranted, but it's there.

If anything, Thailand is probably the least judgemental society in the world (at least, for the things a tourist does).
