Ziggystardust,
I am quite surprised at your post,
Yes westerners do bring in cash, & lots of it to the LOS, but it does not get a fair distribution, & yes I have been to Issan, it broke my heart, & you can believe that, take it or leave it, thats why I never went back!! There are many unfair things in the LOS. I also understand that the Thais hide a great deal from us, like the sex industry that caters for the locals is larger than ours, & also there is a drink problem amoungst the locals.
We will have to agree to disagree on the "polution" the west brings in, & agree on the larger lout question, I have absolutely no time for these idiots, I saw loads of them on my last trip. Even Mamasans & bar owners I have known for years have said to me the quality of the westerner coming to the LOS is going down rapidly!! The package tour horde do not put money out into the community in the same way the sex tourist does. The horde & probably the larger louts just book whats in the brochure. That means many other airlines rather than TG & also major chain hotels do not belong to the Thais except in name, they are coperations owned by share holders & the idle rich, they don't live in Issan. The horde don't bar fine or give the GG's & LB's many tips & certainly don't buy many drinks, I watch them on my trips as they are a never ending source of amusement. Backpackers are even worse !!!
Sex tourists tend not to stay in package tour chain hotels, as they will not be particually welcome, they also buy more drinks for the GG's / LB's & are more likely to bar fine & tip, a % of that tip will find its way back to the family in Issan or another province & not the coperate or share holders pocket.
With so much travel i see the polution of the west all the time, yes they bring the money in, but invarably it artificially jacks up the price. Pattaya used to be a quiet ish fishing village then along came the GI's on R&R from Vietnam, followed by sex tourists, & oil terminal workers, the locals have left they can't afford it anymore. The money flows in & helps in some ways but not to tho's that desperately need it !!
