I have read nothing on any forum about the passing of the Iron Lady. I always thought she was a Fantastic Leader.

    Hi TM,

I guess it depends on your viewpoint. Having followed discussions on another forum, people either respected her, or hated her.

There is no doubt she was decisive and made difficult decisions she felt were best for the country. There is also no doubt that a lot of people were badly affected by her decisions.

For me, I think that she was the right leader for England at that time. I do believe unions are necessary, having been a member of one on the past. There does have to be a balance of power though, and if unions are too strong, then productivity and the economy can suffer. Then the reverse is true if the owners/companies have too much power - which can lead to exploitation of the workers.

When Thatcher became prime minister, unions in England had gotten to the stage of causing major disruptions with frequent strikes, with resulting economic losses. She made choices to stop that from happening - but whether she could have done it a different way with less drastic measures - is open to debate.

I don't think I could say she was a great leader, but I do think she did the best she could and it did benefit England even though it hurt many people. There is no doubt her nickname was appropriate!

I just think that we should appreciate people who are willing to not be wishy washy. May not agree with her or RR on many things. But at least they had convictions. Many people go through life just going with the current. I like conviction, no I RESPECT conviction.

Sometimes conviction is not good if someone is completely wrong - North Korea is a good example, but generally I would agree with you.

Thatcher was a hypocrite along with Bliar

She made those who run "The City" wealthy beyond their wildest dreams and decimated vast areas of "working class" Briton which if you listen to some have not recovered in an entire generation..

            There is no middle ground

I admit to having limited knowledge but i would suggest that those working class areas were doomed at any rate.

Australia is littered with ghost-towns of bygone mining booms.

I have no issues with her underlying rationale but the lack of social concern in tackling the well entrenched problems seems rather cold.

I guess it is different being an outsider. I always thought she was up front where as Reagan was a professional liar.

TM - certainly for politicians and lawyers - as for the rest of us?
