He wasn't stripped of VIP status as he did not want to renew as a paying VIP member. The deadline came up for him and he posted that his circumstances had changed so (I think) he would not be able to visit LOS as often for a while.

yes, non VIP members cant read or reply to PMs as I found out by not renewing in time..
