Ladyboys who live normal lives in polite society get my full support but I don't envisage chasing or wooing them.

I like the freedom to meet them on holiday in their bars or clubs & if they appear happy, then ask them if they want to come home with me.

I am not so delusional that I believe I have won a heart, but I won't entertain anyone who doesn't at least act as if she likes me.

Some of these Miss Tiffany entrants are stunning & would have very high expectations from any suitor, either Thai or farang.

Money would no doubt help but I would need a lot of encouragement before I started the whole routine of sending flowers & ringing for dates. Perhaps 10 years ago but now, drinks & a barfine are more my speed.

I have to lift my game just to play that game these days...

Yes high maintenance can be a turn off. As you say the other 'game' is at least simpler.

It's often been said that these contests are rigged and the "winner" has already been selected before the event begins.

However there is no denying that contestant No 26 is an amazing creature and the best candidate for first prize compared to the two girls whom are standing either side of her in the above pic.

Just the fact that they are taking estrogen from 11-12 years of age makes me love Thailand so much more. This would be considered child abuse in any western nation but in LOS there's no problem.

Nalada 'Mix' Thamthanakorn, the new Miss Tiffany Universe, isn't confused in the slightest

The Miss Tiffany Universe pageant will always have its mysteries. The men might not be men - or women. Perhaps they're no longer men, and perhaps they're men with artfully crafted breasts and noses.

Either way, the men in the audience ogle them and the women at their sides look on sulkily.

This year's winner, 19-year-old Nalada "Mix" Thamthanakorn, looked wonderful from any distance in Pattaya last Saturday, a ringer for actress Usamanee "Kwan" Waitayanon.

Even in the confusion of the Battle of the Sexes, Mix refused to admit that there's anything apt about her nickname, or that there's anything mannish about her any longer.

"I'm a girl - I've lived as a girl since I started university," the Bangkok University student declared. Declining to confirm or deny a sex-change operation, she said she's transformed herself into a girl 100 per cent.

The family, she added, has been supportive all along. The high cost of "adjusting" has never been a problem.

"My parents are well off," Mix said, shrugging off the financial burden that afflicts most ladyboys who have to hide the physical evidence of their gender until there's enough money for an operation.

One of the contestants arrived at the Tiffany Club for the contest in his work clothes - he's an airline steward - and underwent the transformation from he to she in the ladies room.

Befitting her title, Miss Congeniality Assachankawe Promakson readily admitted to being a bloke, and he isn't sure he wants an operation to change that fact.

"I'd always know that I'm really a man trying to be a woman and acting like a woman."

The pageant's perennial theme is, after all, "I am what I am".

Another contestant, Rinlada Wivatmatakul, has had the surgery and announced her womanhood with supreme confidence. She had that same boisterous self-esteem that helped win Mix the title.

But what else does it take? Last year's Miss Tiffany Universe, Sorawee "Jazz" Nadtee, scored points with tanned skin and a rather extraterrestrial look, but being cute - ab-baew - isn't everything.

"If a contestant is ab but short on intellect, the judges won't choose them," said Alisa Panthusak, the assistant manager at Tiffany and the owner's daughter.

Mix grabbed attention right off the bat with her "mix" of young and fresh plus a charming "straightforwardness", Alisa said.

Certainly the runners-up - Chanya Denfanapapol and Numpath Prasopchok - were equally as beautiful. All three are university students hoping for careers in show business.

Amid the stammering and other signs of nervousness during the contest, there were some tricky questions from the judges, which Mix, by good fortune, managed to avoid.

"What law would you want to change?" one contender was asked. "Which character from literature would you like to be?" judges prodded another.

Mix, in contrast, was asked to come up with a word that she felt described her.

The word was "determination".

It didn't hurt either that Mix is represented by the same talent agency as the internationally celebrated ladyboy Treechada "Poy" Marnyaporn, whose success owes everything to that fresh, young look and outspoken confidence.

Mix has it, and the best of the rest in pageants like this have it too.

Some contestants might have a deep voice, others a subtle bulge in the swimwear, but if "young and fresh" is also in evidence, and the readiness to speak out when the moment demands it, you've got a shot at the diamond tiara, baby!
