    Stoogie, I forgot to say about that greeting - I have to deal with a lot of government civil service types and they REALLY do talk and write like that! They would not realise your writing was a parody.

    cheers

      I'm fine with Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, Festivus, whatever. However, I have a deep dislike for "Happy Holidays" since the implication is that it's somehow offensive to use the other words. And in two weeks I'll be pining a LB to the mat for a belated Festivus!

            Hey WT, Kwanza was created by African American marketers (not trying to be PC, black marketers is confusing in this case)
            around 10-15 years ago. Everything, including Christmas, was new at some point.

            Festivus was created over 30 years ago by the father of a kid who grew up to be a writer on Seinfeld. I suspect that Festivus is more similiar to the old winter solstice rituals than anything else out there.

              Hi PD

              Thanks for the kwanza explaination.

              When you say "Festivus was created over 30 years ago by the father of a kid who grew up to be a writer on Seinfeld" are you talking about Larry David? (I am a major league Seinfeld fan btw) I had assumed that Festivus sounded so loony that it was simply an idea they dreamed up for a script. Do you mean that someone's father really created Festivus?

              cheers and and happy festivus

                Hi again

                actually, having just done a Google search, I can now answer my own question. Check out:

                http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/lifest..._festivus.html

                "The actual inventor of Festivus is Dan O'Keefe, 76, whose son Daniel, a writer on "Seinfeld," appropriated a family tradition for the episode. The elder O'Keefe was stunned to hear that the holiday, which he minted in 1966, is catching on. "Have we accidentally invented a cult?" he wondered.

                Maybe.

                To postulate grandly, the rise of Festivus, a bare-bones affair in which even tinsel is forbidden, may mean that Americans are fed up with the commercialism of the December holidays and are yearning for something simpler. Or it could be that Festivus is the perfect secular theme for an all-inclusive December gathering (even better than Chrismukkah, popularized by the television show "The O.C."). Or maybe, postulating smally, it's just irresistibly silly."

                Fed up with commercialism? Roll on festivus.

                best wishes to all

                WT

                  Hi all, and merry Christmas;

                  I thought this might help with kkkwaanza;
                  America - the greatest country in the world - was founded on the concept of religious freedom. In America, you can be a Christian, Jew, Muslim, atheist or pagan without fear of persecution. While government cannot endorse one religion over the other, individuals can.

                  For decades, the media have given credence to many a self-appointed black "leader", no matter how outrageous. Now they're doing the same with a pagan ritual called Kwanzaa, a so-called African-American holiday. A made-up, anti-Christian observance, Kwanzaa is celebrated by blacks who profess Christ. In our politically correct climate, even President George Bush, a believer in Christ, feels obligated to praise this ritual.
                  Kwanzaa was invented in 1966 by Dr. Maulana "Ron" Karenga, a former black militant, a Marxist and a convicted felon. Claiming to have the unity of black people in mind, Karenga committed most of his crimes against blacks. Just five years after his invention of Kwanzaa, he was convicted of torturing two black women by stripping them naked, beating them with electrical cords, placing a hot iron into the mouth of one and mangling the toe of the other in a vice. During the ordeal, he forced them to drink detergent.
                  Karenga intends Kwanzaa to be an alternative to Christmas so that blacks can celebrate themselves rather than the birth of Christ. Kwanzaa is not an innocuous celebration of black history. It attempts to spiritualize that history, replacing Christ-centered theology with pagan principles.
                  The Fall of Man was the direct result of our determination to become gods. The pagan ritual of Kwanzaa is merely the old Lie wearing a new disguise.

                  Sorry to be such a downer, but when I hear "Happy KKKwaanza" I have a hard time being civil. And it would be a lot nicer if Bush wasn't such a pussy on such things, and if I hear him say..."islam is the religion of peace" one more fuckin time, I swear I'm gonna blow something up.
                  other than that ladies and gentlemen,
                  Have a nice Christmas

                    So it seems that both Kwanza and Festivus were both invented in '66. Maybe I'll invent a new religion; one of the sacraments can be sucking ladyboy cock!

                        Icecycle;

                        I just did the cut and paste, basically, to point to my distaste of kkkwaanza. I like being American though. Do we have problems politically? You betcha we do, and it's a pisser to have to vote for the guy who's only qualification is, he'll take us to hell slower than the other guy. There will be upheaval one day and I believe in my lifetime. It's not only getting uglier out there, it's getting scary dangerous.
                        But this is not the thread, this is the lb lust line, and to all, have a merry Christmas.
