  • Broadband now the way to go

    Maybe this is the wrong place to post this, but it does say  NEWS  for this forum.  When I first met stogie 18 months ago he told me that less than 10% of the  US market had broadband/DSL, and an even much smaller percentage for the rest of the world.    Didn't take long for the USA to pass the 50% mark....can the rest of the world be far behind?

    This website and every single website on the internet can be much better enjoyed with high-speed service.  If  you people can get it and haven't yet,  WHAT ARE  YOU WAITING FOR?

         Broadband usage in the US of A  hits the 51%  mark.....YIPPEE!!!

    I wish everyone had it. It would make all web site designing much more fun! At the moment we have to design for people in net cafes in Thailand who share a 56K modem!

    So what do you have?

    I recently made the switch to ADSL - and while it is bettter than what I had before it is still fairly patchy! The Thai sites load up a treat, but the US ones are slow.

    For your interest it is about US$30 a month for 2.5 Megs per second. You can get packages as cheap as 500 Baht for .5 of a meg per second (about 13 bucks a month)

    It will get better of course - at least in Bangkok it will. But for all other places prepare to pay at least 150 bucks a month for a business ISDN line or settle for 'dial-up'!

      I was on a dial-up in BKK all winter and was doing this for 6 months;

          in the states  I am on  what some consider the fastest connection in the country, Comcast digital, which  makes me do this;

           at the moment I am on a dial-up and back to banging my head and watching the crappy little hour glass.  Blue Ballz...how the hell can you stand this?

        Guys,

        Been on Broadband for 2 years now...never going back. Always wondered how you put up with it BB's. You know AOL is cheaper if you use Broadband.... Put that savings towards your Cable lines bill.

        BTW - Thanks for lunch, good seeing you again !!

            stogie/jaidee:

            is it possible to have two download options - one for those of us who are lucky enough to have broadband and the other for those who do not?

                  It think this is an excellent idea and I have been in favour of it for videos for as long as I can remember! It puts a lot more work on the guys though...

                  As far as The Clubhouse is concerned we don't have much in the way of 'heavy' content so we are OK I think. But where a page is big then we do offer the option of opening links in a new window or not,so dial ups don't have to wait for 100 or so thumbs to load up each time they clcik a link!

                  I hope that we move forward into streaming video for the broadband guys so we don't have to have 1 minute vidcaps...

                  As more and more people have access to Broad band at home the reasons for making a site duel-speed will become less and less.

                  If anyone really is on dial up and can think of changes that they would like to see then post them and we'll chew them over...

                  I like to see fairly nice clear pictures but they are quite a bit bigger...

                  A year ago I was thinking of doing the Super galleries - instead of having all the pics of a model posted like a flip book - just have 50 of them but larger and higher quality...

                  It's a lot of work though and I just didn't have time to get it off the ground...

                  Anyway - post your thoughts - we are always looking for ways to improve...

                      Aww man, I just got DSL here in Bangkok a few months ago... It has JUST become a realistic option here... JI-Net.. 512k DSL 256k upstream, for 2500 baht per month... Its great! Is not quite as good as America, but for Thailand it is wonderful! I was so happy when I got it... Its really hard to... do my job.. on dialup. And for the 2 months I have had it... there has only been 1 hour that it was down... Not bad at all...

                        51% of the US on broadband - I'm still not impressed. Considering that many Asiancountries are almost allon broadband and wireless bb at that.In fact I doubt that you can even find Dial up in South Korea.

                        The internet and phone services in the US are some of the worst in the western world. Outragiously expensive, waaaaay to confusing and service quality that I wouldn't sell to a tramp!

                        My Mobile phone bill is about $3 or $4 a month and my 2.5 MBs DSL which is available everywhere in Bangkok is less that $30.

                        Still - we don't have a Taco Bell!

                          make that the worst in the WHOLE world.   I truly can't believe that  the cell fones in America are as bad as they are, when people call me and they sound like they are under water.   I don't even own a cell fone here; what's the point when all the services suck and they will never get better until they adopt the satellite technology that asian countries use.  those "towers" are a fucking joke and if you are not in range of one  you can't even hear people.  and this is the  country that people look up to as the leaders in cutting-edge technology?    why.....when the little Nokia I use in BKK is much better than anything I can get around here and better coverage.

                            I once called a friend in Boston from  the back of a taxi in Chiang Mai on my cell fone;  ever think you could try that in reverse??
