This is not quite on topic but a few years ago, I was running a company where one of the young guys "came out" as being gay at the company Christmas party.
I had had a shrewd idea for some time, but it didn't particularly bother me. He worked fine, never brought his problems to work in any direct sense, and as far as I was concerned it was his private life and his alone.
Anyway, this particular evening, he geared himself up with rather too much wine and, at around midnight as we were all sitting around talking about football, he suddenly broke in, saying, "'issen, guys. I wamma tell you somink. Right. Womma tell you. Cos you not gonna bleeve it. See. Womma tell you. I'm gay." He sat there, his head wagging from side to side like one of those dogs they used to have in the back of Cortinas (Brit reference).
There was an embarrassed silence among the ten or eleven of us around the table, and I was about to launch into a speech about "how brave he was to come out to his peer group, and how I thought I was speaking for everyone when I said that it didn't matter to us, and his gender preferences yawn yawn yawn" when one of the young guys looked up at him and said "Yeah, well we knew you was a wrong 'un from the start. But it don't make no difference. Just it's your f*ckin' round, now get em in!"
And I swear, everyone just carried on talking as if nothing had happened. The guy who came out looked a bit nonplussed - I think he expected the big drama deal - but as far as his workmates were concerned, it was more important for him to get his f*ckin' round in that to know who he was sleeping with.
And I think that was rather good.

(chris9005 @ Mar. 01 2008,12:16) And I swear, everyone just carried on talking as if nothing had happened.
Coming out to friends may be monumental in their world but I wasn't interested in sleeping with them in the beginning and still not interested in sleeping with them after. If it feels good, do it.
Coming out to your Marine Drill Sergeant Dad and your PTA president Mom might be a bit tougher. Parents will lay the heavy guilt trip on themselves of "where did I go wrong".
So, tell the parents..."Mom, Dad, even though you never bought me Barbie's, GI Joe was still a doll and I don't think Bert and Ernie were just roommates."
