After learning to speak fluent Thai and visiting Thailand 5 times a year for 4 years, I was starting to think that Thai people were professional liars.....then I went to the Philippines and realized Thais are just amateurs.

I lie to them all the time. I don't think I have ever given my real name! Mainly because just once I'd like a ladyboy to ask me something new...

We often comment and complain that Thais lie so much, but I don't know if it is that much more than anyone else. And just how much damage do the lies cause anyway?

i know a lot of people that never lie. my mother is one of them. as for asian ladyboys and lying!!! it's just the way asia is. they tell you what they thing you want to hear, not what the truth is.

OK, while I still wouldnt support that lying is prevalent in Asia, you do have a certain point here.  

Its not lying. Its what Asian culture is about - harmonious people with a deep respect for natural flow of things. Asians do not like confrontations (even if it were the necessary truth) and would exhaust all means to avoid it. Im sure theres many instances this cultural trait is misunderstood as deliberate deceit. Then everything seems fine until theyre cornered and better sense gets them, thus the drastic (and undesirable, yes) truth at the end.  

True enough brocklanders, this cultural trait is in the Philippines also. Pair that with a strong sense of colonial mentality, you have a bunch of people "in awe" with anything foreign and wouldnt want to get into the way of upsetting them.  

But then again, you might be talking of another type of lying, haha!

personally i prefer the truth over lies, and always have .
if someone lies to me i can see right through it in seconds, and no one is ever going to tell me that lying is ok. we all know it is not and if you do tell lies you will feel bad about it
