I just found this thread. Been away for awhile. I just took a short trip to PI and in my experience all the negative comments about safety, etc, were not a problem for me. I'd recall my 1st trip to PI which was 13 years ago and I was kind of dreading the hassles I expected at NAIA when exiting that I remembered from back then, but things had changed. Everything now was very much under control from what I saw. Went thru the same typical passport checks as in LOS, walked out the first double door, went to the nearest money exchange, got some pesos, went out the 2nd double doors, walked across to the stand for hotel shuttles, they called up the shuttle for my hotel, and soon he was there. My lb friend came to the airport to meet me as well, but when we talked on the phone I realized she was upstairs where the departures are, and the lady from the hotel shuttle stand offered to, and then went up there and found her for me, and led her down to where I was. This was a little something extra that I didnt expect.
I stayed in Malate. Not as fancy and upscale overall as Makati, but quite sufficient for my needs. Walked around in the evenings, didn't feel endangered anymore than in LOS walking around Bkk in the evenings.
After a few days in Manila, my lb friend and I flew to Cagayan de Oro and stayed there a few days. I'm still on good terms with my ex's family so visited them while I was there. As for PI lbs being more or less femboys, my lb friend and I met my ex's sister and two nieces for lunch. They knew I was bringing a friend with me but knew nothing about her being a lb. One niece was sitting next to her at the table for lunch and they were chatting away in Cebuano. After we had been there for a half hour or so, the niece apparently asked my lb friend if I was going to get her a fiance visa to come to the USA, thinking or assuming she was a GG. When my lb friend told her we couldn't do that because she was not a GG, but a lb, the niece reacted with total surprise. I could tell something was up so I asked what they were talking about. The niece said to me, "you never told us your friend was a lb, I thought she was a girl and was wondering if you planned on getting her a fiance visa." It was obvious her reaction and not knowing was genuine, so I know of one PI lb who can fool at least some filipinas, even after talking together for a half hour. Femboy indeed!! The nieces and ex's sister were both in awe of my lb's smooth nearly flawless complexion and were asking her secrets as they wanted to get their faces so smooth and clear as well.
Anyway, after some days in CDO, we took a bus to Ozamiz City and then went by van to a small municipality another hour or so to the west. The one thing I noticed especially on Mindanao was the lack of white westerners as compared to most places I've been in LOS. There are some to be sure, but a much lower pct. As my time was drawing to a close, we just reversed direction and took the bus back to CDO and later flew back to Manila.
Most everyone was very nice where ever I went, felt as safe overall as LOS, and even in rural areas, there is no language barrier as many speak passable English.
I would agree that generally PI food doesn't rank with Thai or Indian (my favorite) food, but many things were very good in my opinion. I never went hungry or lacked an appetite.  To me though, the much more extensive use of English by so many people was a big plus. Being able to fully communicate really helps overall and especially if you want to get to know someone.

DP, my advice or suggestion would be don't let any negative comments earlier in this thread about the PI keep you from going there and meeting Andrea if that is something you seriously want to do. Since she is in Cebu, there really is no need to go through Manila, even though I had no problems there, but you can fly direct from HK to Cebu on Cathay Pacific and also I think from Seoul on Asiana.

I really like the PI's although nightlife and food really sucks - the rest (girls, beaches) are absolutely fab!!!!!

CDO is a nice place and most of Phils is nice but Manila is a shithole as are most major cities in the PI. I am talking about going there to find and hook up with many ladyboys not meeting an LB to have a girlfriend holiday...much different circumstances. Mindinao people are extremely nice and IMHO, the most beautiful women in the Phils are in Mindinao...never went there to meet billyboys.
