I think PigDogg and Ziggy are both onto something.
PigDogg points out something we often forget about. In the most obvious sense, these "girls" aren't looking for the same things as GG that we know. GG have built in feelings of motherhood, nest building, social acceptance, protection- these kinds of things they are looking for in a mate.
These LB are much more like guys, who int he absence of a child to care about, will blow their money on Plasma TV's or whatever other material possessions. In their cases, they have replaced a lot of "guy stuff" with "girly stuff" but it is essentially the same habits.
In order to think of what they are looking for in a relationship, you sort of have to remember at the basest level to think like a guy. You can say what you want about modern culture and LB culture, but 100,000 years of evolutionary psychology can't be too wrong.
Men are hardwired to spread the seed, these LB aren't literally thinking "father amny babies in disparate areas because at least one of them is bound to live", but neither are you! You are both puppets of the same mental drive to fuck a lot of different people.
There are many other similar differences, but that would get to be a long explanation. The point being, in trying to determine their puzzling love habits, look no farther than yourself. In many fundamental ways, you have the same programmer.
On to Ziggy's point: It's not only Thai culture he refers to. The idea of romantic "love at first sight" is very new in the world all around. For almost every culture and for most of history, you find a mate based on uniting tribes (this even goes for modern Royalty in countries like England), building wealth, social status, combining useful skills, providing protection etc.
As a guy, you were lucky if the girl was pretty. As a girl, you were lucky if the guy gave a shit about you instead of hitting you in the teeth and telling you to get inthe kitchen. I actually believe that the idea of romantic love has done more for the womens movement than any political or social upheaval.
As people began to get the idea of finding partners based on interest and attraction, men and women began to respect and appreciate each other more.
At any rate- my point was, it's easy to forget but the romantic loveof the ballads from the past 50 years is a very new addition to the scene.
