POL triggered this topic in me...

Did you know that 1 in 1500 people are born with ambiguous genitalia? Some have "micropenis" (almost the size of a clitoris), some have very large clitoris (almost the size of a penis), some have female reproductive organs but a penis, there are even cases of one testicle, one ovary, women with glands that produce too much testosterone and get male features, men who produce too little testosterone and get female features, etc.

They are called intersex people. There are a total of 16 different kinds of intersex conditions. 1 in 1500 is a LOT of people.

The crime, initiated by John Money, a pschologist at Joh Hopkins University, is called something like "optimum gender of rearing" whereby doctors are expected to decide to do surgery shortly or not after birth to "correct" the genitalia. In some cases, where sex is ambiguous (many cases), the doctor is God, and decides the sex of the child. Sometimes it has drastically bad consequences (he guesses wrong, and the child is raised in the wrong gender).

Likely on this forum, we have intersex people, because many people are not informed of the surgery at birth, and there are also conditions like having 46, XX chromosonal makeup (which is the 'normative' female makeup). Which you would never know unles you had your chromosones checked!

By the way there is one karotype called Kleinfelter's condition, where the person has a 46 XXY chromosone makeup (most men are 46 XX, women are 46 XY) and tends to have a lot of female features. Of all intersex conditions, this is the one I wonder about if some Ladyboys have it (no science to support this view by the way).

Parents often freak out when they have 'intersexed' children and make the decision to operate. Also - it is often not noticable at birth and may show up during puberty or even later when it is discovered that the person is infertile etc...

The issues of children born intersexed are social stigma and mental trauma. No operation can put these things right, so surgery should be left till as late as possible unless it is health-threatening. (Examples of these would be endocrinological treatment of a child with salt-wasting congenital hyperplasia, or surgery to provide a urinary drainage opening when a child is born without one.) Yeah - I read big books too!

And don't let's forget the pressures on parents by trigger happy doctors and well-meaning but dangerous quacks. Distress and anguish make people do silly things! Parents often see surgery as a way out of their own problems forgetting that the child has a long future ahead of it.

Your estimation of about 1 in 1,500 is probably fairly accurate but not all of these need corrective surgey and some are barely noticable. Serious defects are probably in the order of 1 in 150,000 and other afflictions that are less serious are much more common.

It is suggested that it is important to assign a sex to the child as early as possible. I disagree with this as children often end up with serious issues if you get it wrong!

Even today too many people have no interest in hearing that sex doesn€™t come in two simple flavours. This leads to a web of secrecy and deceit involving parents and doctors lying to victims and performing unneeded operations.

Times they are a-changin' but not nearly fast enough and certainly not in the Victorian cultures like the US of A.

Ziggy, do you have the genetic make up of men and women reversed?

From my understanding, men are typically 46 XY and women are 46 XX.

          Hi all,

One question that has been nagging at my sub-conscious for many years.

Did I have corrective surgery as a baby?

I have, what appears to be, a scar on the underside of my cock and balls. Is this normal?

I've noticed that a lot of the ladyboys etc. have the same scar.

Does any other member have a similar scar and the same question?

Sorry, yep, got the karotypes reversed. Male = XY, Female = XX.

Stogie, it is ISNA that indicates 1 in 1500 with noticeable medically ambiguous genitalia. Other sources I have note similar kind of rates. Anne Fausto-Sterling says 1% (which most other sources disagree with).

As for spedius question...I don't have such a scar. The only way to know for sure is to ask your parents or get your medical records from when you were young. Most surgery is performed <18 months old, so likely you only have to go to 1 hospital. However, apparently a lot of doctors hid this from children and even parents in the older days, so there is reasonable chance you won't get the info.

Ironically, I just read today that one symptom of Kleinfelter's is a single crease in the palms (vs a kind of Y like crease), which I have. Now I'm curious, so I'm going to get a karotype analysis. However, I have no other symptoms. I would love to know if many Ladyboy's have Kleinfelter's (which triggers feminine like physical characteristics).

              Hi ziggystardust,

              Thank you for your reply.

My parents are either gaga or dead, so I am unable to ask them.

I've opened up a new thread so as to ask the other members the same question.

                Hello Spedius,

As you are in the UK you have the right to access your own medical records.  You could be charged for this.

                The following links may help:-
                NHS
                Direct Gov
                BBC

Alternately you could just ask your own GP about it.
