(Road Runner @ Apr. 01 2007,01:11) I remember hearing some time ago that one of their beliefs is that only 144,000 people can get into heaven.

I figure it's probably full by now so why bother

    RR.

Actually I did read Krakauer's book. Very well written and researched as are all his books.

Assuming his research is accurate, which is probably fair given his stature, this Joseph Smith was the lunatic of lunatics. Polygamy was a "revelation" from God, as were other things like giving all their money to the community (=Smith), living in the past, frugally. How stupid can people get believing this crap? At least Warren Jacobs (the new 'Joseph Smith') seems to be en route to jail now, isn't that right?

... you mean Warren Jeffs (whose cult was at the center of Krakauer's book too). Yeah, this guy and his crew are something else.

That Northern fifth of Arizona is almost not a part of the US.
The whole issue of elders assigning wives, dictating 'morality' and breaking in each daughter at the age of 12 is not just a little sick.

But in fairness, the Church under Brigham Young tried to make the best of all the weird legacies that John Smith left them. And the modern church has disowned polygamy, which is the main justification for arresting and killing John Smith in Navoo.

But still like any religion, it is more about power and money than about salvation ...

        L. Ron Hubbard had it right ... he said "if you want to make a lot of money, start a religion" He got his chance when his series of 12 articles in Amazing Science Fiction were so popular that he combined them into a book (Dianetics) and then built a money-grubbing religion around it (Scientology) ... now there are some real whackos
