Interesting to see genetics jump out to an early lead. I too used to think genetics was the best explanation, but have had a rethink after running across identical twins who went seperate ways (one stayed a guy who married & had kids and the other became a post op ladyboy).

Being "identical twins" too it would be interesting to know why BOTH Jay and Jane actually became ladyboys.

Well, u can easily reject most of your items, because, how can you possibly explain (or vote for) any of those items when the vast majority of LBs are LBs at age 5. For those of you who are not as frequent as some of us here, this is a clear and unambiguous fact. Of course, 5 posters will give a counter-example, and I know a few myself, as there are counter-examples for everything in life, however, listen carefully, MOST LBs are aware of their FEMININE GENDER AT AGE 5. You can thus remove role models, in search of money, blokes in drag, and all that crap immediately.

As for twins, where did u get the idea twins are identical genetically?

They are born that way, it's as simple as that.

I'm surprised at your pole jadeite, as you wrote one of the all-time best descriptions of LBs early in life I've seen on this forum. Anyhow, maybe the "not sures" will move to "genetics" at the end of it, and that is good.

Well, thanks I guess. The poll choices are not intended to give my view but rather an attempt to capture the general consensus. I am aware how young they are when they start understanding they are a girl so I was appalled to learn some who have been around them a long time believe it is just an act they are putting on for the money and that's what inspired the poll.

For the first option (genetic) I was not aware identical twins were not genetically identical unless they are monozygotic twins, though not sure how common that is. The 2nd option of an escapement has been offered by psychiatrists who have studied transexuals, though not in Thailand which I think is different as often it is middle aged farangs who realize they are transexuals, not 5 year olds like Thailand.  The third option of "up to them" seems the common Thai way of looking at it. The 5-7th option are essentially environmental. Now if it is genetic, then environmental factors still are of interest as they allow ladyboys to take on the outward appearance of a girl, something not tolerated so well in many countries. The "gay guy in a dress" is probably the most common theory in farangland and I certainly thought that before coming to Thailand. Karma is a good one that should have been included; some believe it is punishment for being promiscuous in their past life.

The genetic option would make it neat and tidy, but I€™m still not certain about it though your info puts it back on the table for me.

So some Thais believe that LBs are LBs due to not being nice in their previous lives, at least the ones that believe in Karma do, i.e., they were re-incarnated as LBs as punishment. Those same people also believe that one should not mock a LB because it is not their fault; they were born a LB due to the bad Karma of a previous living being (or animal)...they cannot help it. Those that don't believe in this just tend to say 'that's the way it is'.

Actually, genetics is the wrong word. There is no proof of the 'gay gene' or 'LB gene'. So, when I say 'genetics' I really mean they are pschologically born as such; it does not necessarily mean there is Gene ABC on Base Pairs XX-ZZ of their DNA.

Psychology (a non-measurable, but still inherent attribute) does not equal genetics (a physical measurable attribute).
