Why do they become ladyboys?

I believe that the Budhist view is that re-incarnation as a ladyboy is a result of committing adultery in a past life.  It would be sort of fitting if you believed it.

I note that there are no vote for 'Blokes in drag looking for a buck' and one vote for 'They are just gay guys in dresses'

There was one well known and very popular ladyboy that featured regularly on the ATS website.
I did meet her a few times but never went with her as we never really clicked.
Several of the other girls said that she was really just a gay guy acting as a ladyboy to make money  -  sour grapes?

My opinion as to the resons they become ladyboys?
From what I have seen/experienced it can only be genetics.  But I have also seen examples where both twins have been ladyboys and similarly where one twin has been a ladyboy and one definately a guy.
I await someone who really knows about genetics to explain that.

From what I have seen..this would apply very much in the PI, and some cases in Malaysia as well.

Anatomical, chromasomal or psychological reasons.
Plus there's a strong element of gays wanting to attract straight guys with whom they'd not usually have a chance and there are opportunists seeking quick cash.

Ok, to an extent, but where on earth (in Thailand) would they earn that amount of money. No job i know pays 60-100k a month for a person with little education from the country.

BTW - not disagreeing with you, just opening up the debate.

Yep. I honestly can´t think of a way to make bigger and faster bucks than bein a hooker for lb´s. One of the older hasbeens bought a condo for 1.5 mill.baht. recently, i doubt a lb working a regular job can pul that off. And look at the LV, Gucci, Chanel accesories they all have, at first i thought knockoffs, but noooo, read deal.
They make good money during a few golden years, the smart ones save up for their future.

I think that some of the reasons stated for money can only apply to the p4p lbs - and these are not the majority of the lbs in Thailand.

I really do not know exactly the reasons why they may become lbs - but I think money has to be low on the scale. I have spoken with around 40 - 50 lbs - not a great number and all but one said they knew around the age of 5-7 that they were different, that they felt like they should be girls and not boys.

If you have read gunslinger's great trip report about lbs in Isaan he encountered a fairly large number in their teen years - out in the rural areas money certainly cannot be a significant reason for this.

This board is focussed on the p4p scene, but in reality this is a minority of the lb population in Thailand.

I would guess that it might be a combination of genetics and some other unknown factor that results in lbs.

I think some guys are getting things the wrong way round here , any ladyboy Ive spoken to cant answer how long they have been a ladyboy because in everycase its since they were young , they,ve all wanted to be girls since they were kids .

To think they go through school and transition into ladyboys with hormones , surgeries (not to mention family issues ) to make money from sex with farangs is totally untrue

When they are older that temptation then becomes available to those who choose to do so , some do many do not .

Of course you could not rule out the odd passible Thai man selling his body as a ladyboy just for money , but these would be very few and far between .

and i am not one to attach labels to anyone but MALE for us is anyone who resembles MAN and has the necessary masculine features which differentiate them physically from women....whether Gay, straight or whatever you call them....Male is defined by those boundaries in my opinion....

It's only vaguely related to this topic, so apologies if it is off track. But one thing that has often puzzled me is why (particularly Filipino) LBs describe themselves as homosexual. See, for example, any of the personal ads from Filipino LBs on www.tgpersonals.com. There's one advertising at the moment who describes herself as a man who likes to dress as a woman - and who looks nothing like a man! Most odd.

Most Thai ladyboys describe themselves as gay.

I think it's because the tendency is to try to define sexuality in simple terms of male and female.
From this they are born male and are attracted to males therefore they must be gay.

I think (as I hope do most readers of this forum) that it's not that simple.
Sexuality appears to be many shades of grey rather than just black and white.

There are two girls I have been closer to than the others in Thailand.  Both of them described themselves as gay when I met them.
Both said they always though they were a girl as far back as they could remember.

I reasoned it through with both of them that as they are both girls and attracted only to men then they are not gay.

With going back and forth I missed this post.  In fact I messed up what I was trying to say before!  

Certainly there are a lot of other ways to earn money in Thailand but admittedly the wages are usually much lower and few require so relatively little work input.

What I meant to say is that I don't believe it's that easy for most gay men to put a dress on and pretend to be a girl. It's not in their nature.
Additionally I would think that there are more punters looking for gay 'bois' than there are looking for ladyboys so I don't really see any advantage.
Against that I do know that one ladyboy who featured in photo sets on several sites and was popular with many customers  -  is described by other girls as a gay man.
