Transsexual singer wins top music school place after switching his voice from baritone to a soprano...

When transsexual opera singer Emily De Salvo first applied to one of Italy€™s most prestigious music schools, he was rejected as the board was unsure whether to place him among the male or female singers.

This week, after three years€™ studying with baritone Maurizio Picconi and soprano Amelia Felle, the 29-year-old has won a place at Bari€™s Tito Schipa Conservatory after changing his voice.

De Salvo, formerly Stefano, who has yet to make his gender change complete with surgery, convinced the jury he can handle both sides of the opera spectrum - from male baritones to female sopranos.

The singer believes he has an unusual voice which could help him to claim a niche in opera buffa.

€˜I've been exploring the Baroque repertoire with Felle, exercising my strengthened falsetto,€™ he said.

€˜With Picconi, on the other hand, I've been broadening my baritone chords.

€˜My vocal range is perfect for opera buffa like Donizetti or Rossini,€™ he added, stressing how proud he was to be the first transsexual to claim a conservatory spot.

De Salvo, whose legal name is still Stefano, also thanked Felle for taking his side at his second audition before the entrance panel.

The devoted fiancee who's sticking by her man, the father of her son, despite the fact he wants to become a woman.

€˜She defended me against those who didn't want me,€™ he said.

And he thanked a well-known local transgender musician who accompanied him on the piano during his successful recital of the Handel aria 'Ombra mai fu' in September.

€˜I couldn't have done it without my close friend Luana Ricci,€™ who as Marco Della Gatta claimed headlines when he was sacked as Bari Cathedral organist last year.

    €˜She was exceptional,€™ he added.

An inspiring story... but the woman journalist, Carol Driver - Daily Mail, can't quite get around to referring to her with a feminine pronoun!

I'd say her lungs were indeed qualified to sing any tune...

Singer can take both sexes' roles By Michael Day - The Independent

A trainee opera singer has combined a sex change with a dramatic extension in her vocal range to gain admission into one of Italy's most prestigious music schools.

Emily De Salvo, formerly Stefano, was denied a place at the Tito Schipa Conservatory in Lecce three years ago when the admissions panel was not sure whether to place her among the male or female singers.

But after studying with baritone Maurizio Picconi and soprano Amelia Felle, 29-year-old De Salvo has convinced the conservatory that she has the potential to handle demanding roles from male baritones to female sopranos.

The young singer, who, according to the local Quotidiano Di Lecce newspaper, is still waiting for her gender reassignment surgery, yesterday thanked Felle for supporting her during the second audition. "She defended me against those who didn't want me," she said, before adding that she was proud to be the first transsexual to claim a conservatory place.

Now De Salvo says her unusual voice could help her claim a niche in opera buffa €“ the comic form that developed in Italy at the end of the Baroque period. "I've been exploring the Baroque repertoire," she said. "My vocal range is perfect for it."

The article as it should be written. Well done to The Independent.

Yes, much better in The Indepedent!

Acutally Bobo did a number like that with Venus Flytrap she sang both the guy's part and the girl's part. Too bad they are defunct now.

Plenty of 'trousers' roles for female singers in opera which would mean a man who became a woman taking on a woman's role where she plays a man -Fidelio, Rosenkavalier, Idomeneo...best of luck to her although I haven't heard the voice.

The US has Tonacity/Tona Brown who I once chatted with and has talent of some degree...

The classical world is a bit schizoid about sexuality, few male or female opera singers who are gay make much of it while people assume more male dancers are gay than probably are; it doesn't bother me but I think the establishment -the people who hire and fire- are conservatives.
