let me try and explain something to you guys regarding the recent hack job by some dickless individuals who slowed the site down for everyone and made me and Bueno work overtime trying to resolve it.
This site has increased the amount of bandwidth that we need to operate this site by about 50 times from what we needed when we first opened. That's a good thing; when people are using the website, it means we are popular! Every time we needed more and more bandwidth, we would move up to a higher package and pay more to allow more room for more and more surfers. we even bought our own dedicated server 18 months ago; whereas we used to share bandwidth with other sites, we have our own now and it only operates for this website. better, eh?
every single day the first thing me and Bueno do when we wake up is check the stats from the server that we own to see how much bandwidth we are using up. a typical day should be about 50-75 gigs, depending on updates, new videos, and how many people are hitting the wesbite, inside and out. We are allowed about 80 gigabytes a day with the current package we are on, but it can go as high as 100 without really affecting the sites speed; we have a powerful server and a good package so we are allowed a little breathing room. 18 or 20 months ago we were using up ONE gig a day; growing hurts but its also nice to know we are that much more popular now.
monday night before I went to bed I noticed that this website was running very slow; i was flying out in the morning to LA and knew I couldn't monitor the stats page, so I wrote to Bueno and told him to keep an eye on things. when i arrived here yesterday, the site was unbelievably slow and we were both panicking; he had killed every hacked password he could find, but the site was still moving at a snails pace. the server company couldn't help us; they just said we were using up too much bandwidth and to not send so much product through the pipes. turned out we were on a course to use up 180 gigs of bandwidth yesterday, due to some dickless assholes sending some passwords up to a mesage board and over another 1000 dickless wonders enjoying this website for free. the site wasn't even opening at all and the first thing I faced when i opened my mail after a 10-hour door to door trip was 15 letters from complaining members, who had a perfect right.
the site was still slow as we crashed last night and I was very worried. we woke up today and I had more complaints and the first thing i did was call the server company in alabama, who said the problem was on our end; too much bandwidth being used and not enough space to serve it. bueno and I were perplexed; no new hacks and we had no way to solve this problem. UNTIL....he suggested something radical....kill every pass for the site temporarily, and then re-load them right away within 5 minutes. the assholes who were viewing the site would not remember their passes, and the guys who were legitimate would have them saved and could get right back in, or could just write us and we would send them to them. It worked; within 5 minutes of doing this the site was back to normal speed [like now] and all those eunichs were gone; some of our good customers lost their passes and we apologize for that, but as always one quick letter to me cleared that right up.
please understand this; when the site is slow [which happens maybe once a month] or you guys have your passes killed by accident, it is nothing we are doing on purpose. when the site is slow like yesterday, we LOSE big money, because potential customers surfing by would never join a site that is loading so slowly. it also pisses of members; and rightfully so.
we keep an eye on this shit and usually stay on top of it; we are literally hacked every day and kill the passes before any of you guys even know what hapened, and the site isn't affected at all. this one was like a major league hack and couldn't be stopped.
every site goes through trial and error periods like this which tests our patience and drain our bank books. but hackers are just minor thieves, right? who cares about these guys.....well, to me, they are just one step below Osama and Saddam, and above the stuff that you scrape off your sneakers after you walk through some mud and dog shit.
anyway, problems solved now....sorry if any one was imconvienced by all this....now I can get some sleep.
